assuming you had 20k to spend on a 2nd car, for a sunday blast and the odd track day, what would you get.

looking through top marques its incredible..

C5 Vette
340R
Exige / Elise 2
M Roadster
NSX
Focus RS
Griff 500

Answers on a postcard please????? Not so sure about a Caterham on size and safety grounds?

I would get get a sorted 4.2 Cerbie for under 17k and use the change to make it a little bit more suitable for track work. Nitron shocks and a little brake upgrade should still leave me some cash spare to book myself into a couple of trackdays.

Just have to pass my test and get 20K now

A Lotus Esprit GT3 I think.

(edited to add: or a DeTomaso Pantera if you can find one)

they all seem like good choices with the exception of the focus.. as a second car??!?!? are you mad... it's just soooooo DULL.

NSX is excellent, but think it'd be wasted on a "just for kicks" car.
How about a mint 3rd gen RX7.. and you could just stare and drool all day if you wanted.

You could almost- if you look hard enough get a Elise Mk1 and a Griff for £20k or a 968 & an E30M3 if that helps

Ref Caterham why not try an SV I fit in them fine- quite roomy infact, whereas normal ones are very tight for my 6'3'' and my size 12s press all pedals at once.

If you are sorted for road cars(which it seems you are) my cash would lead me to an Atom, read the forum the owners say much better in a stack than a Caterfield, very unusual too. Nver been in one so dunno how they fit big fellas tho

yeah TVR... Chimaera of course

Thing is it all depends on what you want to do on a track. I bought a tvr cos I want to have fun in a sideways fashion. If you want a car that handles well... but for me trackdays are not about doing quick laps.

For Sunday blasts and track days -- a lightweight fun thing you can throw around, with practicality only a distant third on your list of criteria: Elise or Caterfield, no question.

Look harder. You can get a Alfa Romeo SZ for around 20k, comes with lots of fun and massive respect guaranteed.

Edited to say that you won't get the very best SZ for 20k, but there are some honest examples out there around that price.

340R everytime! Look after it and it'll have near zero depreciation!

340r for road / track.

Caterham for track / Road.

Radical for track only.

None of the other will come close to being half as much fun on the track.

Have you seen the cost of repairs for the EVO test 340R

If you damage anypart of the body you have to replace the lot. The bill for the EVO car was just over £9k IIRC.

Fantastic car but hideously expensive if things go wrong.

I would go for Elise or Caterfield

To change the battery on a 340r I understand you need to remove the entire body. About a days labour to do the job. The designer should be shot.

nah - he just has to do all the battery changes himself

Oh, and the depreciation on them has been horrific if you ask me....am amazed at how little they can be got for now....

Second hand S2000. Not sure where you'd get a s/h NSX without high mileage & auto box for 20k.

No-one mentioned the 968 Clubsport? got loads of accolades for its handling and trackday appeal and for £20k you could get a nice one and kit it right out.
