I've had a busy couple of years and had to put a few things on the back burner.

So although I knew it was in there, and I walked past the doors it was easy to blank it out of my mind.

Now I've decided to relocate and buy a few lifelong wants, time to get my act together.

Looking a bit sorry for himself seeing light for the first time for a while. Definitely a male car.

So now it's time to get him shipshape and decide whether to stick or twist. Heart say stick.

Dragged out into the light. Been there for a couple of years. All dry . I packed the interior and underbonnet and just about every where else from tops of wheels to the top of the exhaust with poison and traps so no vermin.

A quick wash and looking good. Started up after a bit of hesitation but then ran fine. I'll have a good look under the bonnet and inside tomorrow.

Anyway, it's a 1990 S4 which means auto. It has been painted in the past and well. A few little flaws to sort but nothing serious. No rust.

Fantastic - that really deserves to get some TLC.

But now it's clean and running maybe it won't need too much - or are they famous last words?

I think the fact it started and runs fine bodes well. Oil pressure is really good, it's charging and it's not overheating. It's been dry so nothing should have seized up or rusty brakes. etc. Tomorrow I'll try all the equipment and have a good poke around under the bonnet. I'd be more worried if it had been outside and got at by vermin as others have said. Famous last words.

It looks much better for a clean, once it's back on the road you'll keep it.

Ray Northway, of Northway Porsche, with access to every conceivable 911, preferred the 928 as personal transport. Just saying.

Jim, given your user name you might be able to help.

On my list to get an MOT but first I have to deal with the error messages. It was fine when I bought it but reconnecting power seems to have reset to some default settings. It has some weird 80s voice thing like KIT.

When I start it up it asks "where are we going? Then offers these choices:

1. Home. 2. South of France House. 3. Flying Club. 4. Yacht Club. 5. Restaurant 6. Somewhere else?

When I select 6. and say MOT it just says "Do you mean Monaco?

I suspect I may be out of my league.

wink

Is it one of those primitive satnav systems? Phillips CARiN, Autoguide etc.

I recall they were available as dealer-fit accessories in the 1990s. There was very little in the way of a visual clue to their presence, other than a button on the dash and a tiny microphone on the screen pillar. Press the button, and your call would be answered by a human in a call centre who'd ask you where you wanted to go. Once the route was calculated they'd send it to the receiver unit in the car which would talk you through it, turn by turn. It's quite possible that one of these systems could be programmed to accept a few frequently-used locations, such as the ones you've heard.

Didn't have much time to look more closely but underbonnet and inside haven't deteriorated at all.

I'm not surprised little has got in (only to be poisoned or trapped if it did biggrin) as doors, etc close like bank vaults. You would not want your finger in the gap. Having said that, the bonnet must be ally because it's light as a feather.

Seats are very high quality. Just one bit of bolster wear on the driver's seat so if I keep this car I'll get that bit replaced. Nice weather this week so hopefully I can get him out and run the vacuum through.

Just an update on this one. Electrics and mechanicals all seem good. Don't know about the aircon so I think it'll need a specialist diagnosis although I might just bung a few quid at a regas first. I'm going to get the driver's seat bolster retrimmed, together with one from another of my cars so hopefully the seat removal won't be too difficult and it won't be too pricey.

Apart from that, I can't see anything else that needs replacing so it will be more about cosmetics, especially inside. It's grubby not damaged as far as I can see and doesn't smell as if it was ever a smoker's car.

Just a quick update as I'm making a few plans for next year and jobs over the winter,

There was some rust - back of both sills and under one of the rear curved windows. I had the sill/arch areas properly fixed with the rot cut out, replacement sections welded in and painted and the rear window removed and all rust removed before repainting. Also got it up on a ramp. Nothing nasty underneath but while it was being given a spruce up the rocker cover gaskets were replaced as they were weeping.

So it's now completely solid and the winter plan is to get the interior right up to scratch, starting with the seat bolster I referred to in an earlier post.

On the days it's too cold to summon up enthusiasm to go outside I have two boxes of paperwork to go through. The previous owner appears to have keep comprehensive records and there's also a selection of tools/small parts I don't recognise so hopefully they won't be to tricky to identify.

As for driving - quite hard to describe - an agile rapid tank?

Any reliable sources for trim parts would be welcome.
