I bought a 1989 Merc SL 300 cab
Discussion
I kept thinking back to all the times I have sat in traffic in a powerful car - also walking round the car in the garage afraid to scratch it.
I realised I prefer to have a car I can tinker with ( I have done this with my Nissan figaro ) over a car with loads of power that I’m
Afraid to even polish, hence the choice.
I just hope I like it. It’s been partly restored, the important parts replaced , bulkhead, floor plan etc so it’s good to go.
Anyone else owned one ?

Your wish is my command, I suppose they will take the ad down when I drive the car away !

Well - the guy I bought it from is 83 years old and he said he wanted one because he’d seen the SL that Bobby drove! He waited until he was retired and bought the one that I have now bought, so it’s a nice story. Of course, being the good ole US, Bobby’s is a v8.
It’s in lovley original condition. Including the paint which is incredible. It has a recent full stainless pipe which is a little louder than standard but not too bad. I’m getting it Tuesday to drive it back from Bristol to Swansea - fingers crossed for decent weather . . …

I was looking for a c63cab but ended up buying a rather nice SL300 cab instead.
I’m pretty bored with time on my hands - anyone interested ? Shall I start a new owners thread? I suppose if no-one replies I’ll know there’s no interest !
I’m going to collect it on Tuesday.
I'm sure there will be interest, thread now in Reader's CarsI’m pretty bored with time on my hands - anyone interested ? Shall I start a new owners thread? I suppose if no-one replies I’ll know there’s no interest !

Looking forward to updates

I’m no car expert, I have a Nissan figaro which I have lightly restored ( including wide alloys and tyres on new shocks which means it hold the road like glue) and that really is the perfect round town cabriolet / open car. But I never have the confidence to go too far in it and my wife and I like to have spa weekends around the uk. I’m hoping the SL will do this.
It will have the hard top on when I pick it up and I’ll need help when I get home to take that off but then again I think I’ll use it in the cold a few times with the hard top on. From then on it will only really be used in the dry and then spend its life in the garage. So I do think that once the hard top is off, it won’t be going back on again. It really is for cruising around with the top down. Going to and from the gym and a few weekends away.
It looks so so straight - love this pic :

Congratulations. They're wonderful cars. And that's a lovely colour. I sold my 380 a couple of years ago after a decade of ownership and 40k miles. Definitely worth making sure you've got the right tyres and that the suspension and brakes are sorted so it rides as it should.
If you're looking for a shop to look after it for you, I wouldn't recommend the one you mentioned in one of your posts. I found them to be all moo and no milk.
