2005 C55 AMG Estate

I thought I should put a post up of my most recent purchase, a 2005 C55 AMG Estate.
Since my UP GTI was relegated to weekend duties (after racking up 30k miles in two years for work and being replaced by a Skoda Enyaq), I fancied a toy with a V8 again, as it had been a while (previous V8's include an E39 540i sport and a 2002 CL500).
With the Merc V8s tending to be more reliable, but I not wanting to spend C63 money (and you hear of the horror stories), I really wanted something with an M113 engine. A CLK55 was top of the list, but they are few and far between, so when this popped up, it made sense, as it would be more practical for us as a family, including a 5-year-old!




I've seen this car a few times, but I went in to have another look, seeing as I now own its twin!





The car came on S55 rear wheels with wider tyres, but luckily also had the C55 wheels with it as it drove fairly badly. I re-fitted the correct wheels and had a new set of Goodyear Asymmetric 6's fitted, which improved things a lot. I also fitted a CLK grille (I didn't like the fully chrome slatted one on silver) and because these are a CLK from the wings forward, its a straight swap. I also had the resonator removed...
The car actually came with a secondary cat and resonator delete pipe, which was removed the day before I viewed the car, as a previous viewer was not keen on it. I think this setup would be too loud for me, but now the single resonator removal doesn't seem quite enough. I will probably end up fitting it as a test, then possibly having the factory resonator fitted to leave it within just the secondary cats deleted - how confusing.
I enjoy doing the little fixes, so there will be more to come, including a probable suspension refresh at the rear and, no doubt, the front at a later date.

That looks superb pal; not a car you see that often.. Suits silver to a tee as well 
The Goodyear Assym6s are superb tyres; I think you'll get on with them really well... We have them on our F31 as summers (Vector Gen3 all seasons as winters) and they're superb as well...
I'm probably one of the few that isn't that taken with PS4s etc; find they go very hard quickly and drone a lot too. Whereas the Goodyears stay soft'ish and have fantastic grip in the wet and dry

They are great, slightly softer than the equivalent Michelin and as Dan says below, seem to last longer, are quieter and are usually cheaper, too. I'd potentially look at a more "Touring" tyre for an S though, unless its a fast one..danb79 said:

Agreed. I probably would have got Sport Contact 7's if I could get them in the correct sizes, as they seem to have won a few tests recently.Max M4X WW said:

Nice purchase, can't beat a German V8 on the lowish tax bracket! On my S4 I found resonator delete largely pointless unless you're screaming it, back boxes are the key. I also thought cat deletes can need a remap so be wary if tinkering. Enjoy!
Ah yes, I wasn't totally against £700 tax given it does 20mpg, but the lower one helps!The cat's will be fine ECU wise as I'd only remove 2 of the 4, emissions test though, who knows.
How proper. I prefer these to the C63, and can’t quite put my finger on why. The lengthened front end makes these look right compared to a regular C-class too.
When you come to sell this please give me a text, Max. I’d love a C55 and have wanted one for ages. Also bring it to some shows/meets so I can drool over it, please.
Did these also come in colours bar silver snd black? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that wasn’t that colour.

I will certainly give you a shout, not sure how long it will stay yet! I will bring it out, just let me know if you are going to anything that I may have missed..
I've seen a few in other colours, and I've actually started a "UK register" as I was interested in how many of the 100 on HML still exist. There are a couple in a mid grey/gold colour, I've seen an imported champagne gold one and also a lovely Merlot red colour. Most were black and silver hough!

Saloon with funny wheels?I'm quite fond of ours, had it a few years now. If I have any advice it's keep a close eye on the rear wheel arches, even if they have been repaired they really do like to rust there. Also if you haven't take the underbody covers off and make sure your sills are ok. They are well hidden from the MOT man and can be slightly non existent if you're unlucky...
