Hi all,

We recently acquired my dad's old Morris Minor, it belonged to my dad since 2007, it's had a Charles ware conversion and has a Morris Marina 1275 engine, disc brakes and uprated suspension.

We used to go for days out in it with my dad when my son was very young, when my dad got ill with dementia my uncle bought it from my dad 4 years ago.

I wasn't in the position at the time but I said that if he ever sold it I'd take it on with my son who also has fond memories, so Saturday it was delivered back to us smile

It was arranged by my uncle to have his friend deliver it really early at my mums from a car transporter, around 5:30 am my mum sent me these photos when she looked out of the window:-

A ghostly car appears out of the mist....

We got round a couple of hours later:-

First thing we did was take out for a spin and then a basic outside, inside clean to bring back the shine.

It's going to live in my mum's garage so no worries about it becoming more weathered.

We need to learn a bit about carburettors!

Keep tuned..Next step we attempt de-rust the chrome and some surface rust... I'll put the pictures up later smile

Cheers!

Fantastic!

Don't go poking any rust too much... it's a slippery slope! hehe

Surely the best of a Marina!

What suspension mods have been done?

Don't worry about the carb, if it runs fine now the carb won't go out of tune. Just need to top up the oil in the dashpot once in a while. If it still has points then you will need to learn how to set them and check them every 3000 miles or so. Keep the steering greased up as well, again part of the 3000 mile check over. Keep an eye on the eye bolt bushes on the front suspension, they are the first part to wear out. Otherwise nothing much to worry about with a minor.

Plus a little bit of surface rust and imperfections give the car some character and add to its story, imo.

Wonderful stuff - agree that a bit of patina is good, don't go too over the top!

Nice. My Dad has a Minor in the same colour which I’ve driven a few times and had a lot of fun doing so.

We then had go at some of the rust spots on the Chrome using some AutoSol and soft wirewool

Slightly smeared but much better than it was..

Then onto the chrome bumper that suffered from pitting and rust spots:-

10 minutes later...

Not perfect but an improvement smile

More to follow..

I need to look at the paperwork, it was listed under the Charles-Ware conversion as suspension upgrades front and rear.

1275cc, does that mean it lost its iconic ‘pops and bangs’ sorry I mean ‘burps and flatulence’, does the speedometer give a rough estimate of progress, nice to see so many gauges present, got to love simplicity. I’m guessing the white switch, to the right of the steering wheel is for the spotlights.

I think you and the lad are going to have a lot fun “these are rather good at drifting”. Looks like a nice example, sensible upgrades and with a personal connection. Nice pictures and write – up, thank you for taking the time to share.

Yes no pop and bangs, I do love the simplicity of the controls, I'm pretty sure you are right at the white switch, I need to check though smile

It's really nice to be able to take over from my dad, he loved the car but didn't get to drive it as much as he would have liked. He always wanted me to take it on but I was too buried into the Fiat Coupe maintenance and expenditure to take it on 4 years ago, but pleased we can now smile

Wow love the story!

My dad had two MM when I was a kid, the first he took of the road and his older brother rewelded it all, it was ready for paint but sat at a painters for about 15 years, the painter closed up and took the car with him, believe it has since been scrapped. the second somebody else owns on the MM Facebook group.

Wish we could of got hold of the scrapped one again!

Ah that's a sad ending, do you reckon you'd get another one?

Needs some era black and silver plates! Very cool car though.. Enjoy it. Nice to be able to take it on and continue the story.

It's still an A-Series engine, still a 5 port head, so it'll still sound (relatively) the same as standard.

So we had go at the surface rust with some WD-40:-

before

after, not perfect but good at 6 foot away smile

Quick question on the first picture below, does anyone know is the screw at the bottom right (next to the choke) wire the idle screw? The idle is running a bit high when stationary, so would to adjust it slightly down.

Cheers!

It's great that you're having a go and keeping the Morris in the family, I'm looking forward to seeing more.

I did see a video of someone cleaning/ removing rust from a chrome bumper using Coca Cola and aluminium foil, I'm assuming the phosphoric acid in the cola helps neutralise/ eat at the rust and the aluminium acts as an abrasive to but isn't too aggressive?

How is the 1275 for driving in modern traffic? I know of a MM that needs saving but it's a much smaller engine so I'm weighing up what I'd do to make it useable.
