Thought I’d start a thread on my newly acquired 2008 Cayman S. I had wanted something that was a bit more of an ‘occasion’ car than my Mini JCW & spotted one at a dealership not far from me who are well regarded for the prep of their cars.

I travelled to have a look & it was fantastic, ludicrously clean on top, underneath & inside for its age. I did a deal based on a clear bore scope & thankfully all appeared well.

The gist of it is; manual, 32k miles, a great service history. Replacement coolant crossover pipes & hoses just done, four new Conti Sport 7 tyres, with pretty recent tuning forks and discs & pads all round.

Spec - there is some biggrin - not 100% sure what’s optional & what’s not, but -

19" Wheels
PCM with Nav
Cruise control
Embossed headrests
Rear parking sensors
Sports steering wheel
Rain sensing wipers
Xenons
Auto Dimming Mirrors

Initial impressions are that the steering & turn-in are fantastic, and the sound of the flat 6 at full chat is superb.

Short term plans are to do an oil change with some Miller’s NT+ (I like to do a change on all my new cars, even if not strictly needed) & get it protected underneath ahead of winter. And drive the thing!

So here it is - dealership pics & one back on my driveway upon my return home.

First real run out in the car yesterday as I had a day off. It was a beautiful late summer day so I headed up to Aberfoyle for a blast over the Duke’s Pass.

Great day, light traffic & the car was excellent. Biggest thing just now is to get used to a N/A car again, all of my recent cars have had turbos & it’s a re-learning process keeping the engine in the sweet spot rather than relying on a gob of torque being on tap at low revs. Great fun!

Lovely car. I think these represent the best bang for buck in terms of 4 wheel fun that can cater for most occasions. My uncle has a Boxster S with a short shifter and sports exhaust, it’s brilliant.

The short shifter seems like a relatively cost effective mod that really adds to the experience.

Did you get any engine checks done or just buy it?

Tell me you haven't read his post properly, without telling me you haven't read his post properly...

Re-read the OP, as it is specifically mentioned in there.

Haha, no worries mate. I got a bore scope done with video, photos & a statement saying it was clear of scoring,

Oil change today. Although the last one was less than 2000 miles ago it’s good to know that your own fresh oil & filter are in place. Also a good chance to inspect the filter for extra peace of mind.

Easy change, everything very accessible - but bloody hell, the oil shoots out at a fair old rate! biggrin I’d read it was very important to get the car level & sure enough a good bit more oil came out once the front was jacked up. Refilled with Millers CFS 5w40 NT+. I’d thought about going to 10w50 as mentioned in a few places, but not sure the mileage on this engine warrants it, so just went slightly thicker than the OE spec.

Thanks,I was just interested in your approach as ive been looking myself and see lots of well priced S models but as you did would definitely need to get the scope done first.
Who did the scope for you if you dont mind me asking?

The supplying dealer brought in the equipment & a local mechanic/specialist carried out the scope.

Sold these used for many years. Such great value and very competent vehicles. Had countless hours behind the wheel of these up and down the country. Became very adept and comfortable driving them, the only car I could really properly 'heel toe' in without cocking it up constantly, something about the pedal offsets. They're great with a short shift kit too.

Was pleased to see you'd done your due diligence with a borescope. We had to pay for a rebuild on a relatively low mileage example and I cannot count how many we had inspected or walked away from with scoring issues.

That looks really great. thumbup

I've never driven a Porsche - maybe I need to have a chat to my mate who has a Boxster S!

First issue with the car raised its head last Friday. I was on my way to work first thing and thought there was a bit of additional noise behind me (these cars are quite ‘chattery’ anyway), but by the time I got back close to home in the afternoon it was clear something was amiss. I suspected a failing water pump as the noise sounded like a grumbling bearing, and fortunately I could quickly divert to a nearby Porsche specialist just up the road from me.

A mechanic had a quick listen in the yard and also thought it was the water pump on its way out, although (thankfully) there was no overheating or coolant loss so until things were stripped down there was no way of knowing for sure. A slightly anxious weekend ensued, but fortunately the initial diagnosis proved correct and was rectified under warranty (supplying garage and the specialist both took care of this very efficiently, I didn’t have to speak to anyone). I also took the opportunity to have a low temp thermostat installed while the work was being done anyway, so it’s worked out fine in the end.

Gratuitous pic at work this morning, I really love the classic Porsche lines on this car.

Me too, the 987 Cayman is a fine looking car.

Good to see it is going well, waterpump aside. Saw it advertised, they seem to only sell excellent condition cars.

At the risk of this going a bit Mumsnet, here’s a post about hoovering.

Now that the leaves are falling, I purchased this attachment for my Henry to get in about the radiators. Made getting all the crap out absolutely effortless!

There was a surprising amount in there. This will become a monthly ritual from now on.

Yeah, their prep is excellent. They bought my S5 off me at the start of the year & were excellent to deal with then too.

Think a lot of people change those grilles to stop the leaves getting in there. Zunsport is the brand most go for.
