21 with a big Volvo
Discussion
My fourth daily in the 4 years of driving!
First (2020)
2016 VW Polo 1.0 S (60hp)
Second (2022)
2017 BMW 330e M Sport
Third (2023)
2023 Mercedes EQC AMG Line Premium
If we aren’t counting the Fiat 500e family car, here’s my fourth daily! An unusual car for a single 21 year old but I like it!
Fourth (2024)
2018 Volvo V90 D4 R-Design
After giving up new cars due to the horrendous experience with the Mercedes and not needing 2 EV’s, tomorrow I pick up this lovely Volvo V90 D4 diesel.
It looks very forlorn in those pics, it had just come on to site, in pretty poor bodywork condition. Luckily, it came up pretty nice, and I bought it on the basis of the insane amount of history it has, clearly owned by a very anal previously owner! I snapped it up within 12 hours of even being listed. Hadn’t been valeted or touched in these pics.
I chose the Volvo because I fancied a change and like the look of the estates. I also do a lot of miles and have a knackered back from injuries, so this one looked good. I felt the “Inscription” looked too old man for me, but I did consider the CC.
This one has a few choice goodies, having Polestar pack, Apple Carplay, On Call, Front assist, Pilot Assist, privacy glass and had the benefit of being £4k less than the others I was looking at.
The V90 had much cheaper insurance than the Germans which was a winner for a 21 year old. And I get to tell my mates, “here’s my (bi)turbo”
I pick it up tomorrow, here’s to many reliable miles. When insurance rates go down, expect a toy parked next to it

Made it home! Here it is sitting with its little brother.
First thing to do was give the interior a good clean with Dr Leather solution and wipes as it was looking a bit oily from 60+k miles.
It came out pretty well.
First impressions of the car, are my word it’s relaxing. This is the R-Design which I worried might be a bit too bumpy but it isn’t, its a bit firmer than the Inscription but not at all uncomfortable, infact it’s less sickness inducing as the body control is pretty good and you don’t feel too isolated. You are incredibly comfortable in this car.
The seats! They’re a work of art, my spine is thanking me already.
The Polestar map on the D4 engine is just right, good mid range punch, no expense in economy, and less peaky.
The only con is I wish I got the “Pro pack” as this car has no Keyless, no leather dash and door tops, and no 360 cam. But I go to sleep happy as I got a great deal and it was 4-5k less than those cars.
The only plans I have for now are:
Get all 4 of these fked wheels refurbished.
Get those silly cheapy Kumho’s off this car and fit 4 Michelin CC’s. It already had them on but the dealer removed the front two.
Get a reversing camera installed (!!)
All in all I was very impressed with this Volvo, it already feels like a comfy armchair. The perfect car to go next to a toy.
I have noticed myself driving like an OAP and not a dhead (like in my BMW) in this car because it’s just so relaxing!

Wow. Any idea what's caused the paintwork to peel like that?
Our XC90 has lacquer peel on the wheels which I understand is due to a smart repair where they lightly refinish the diamond cut and then simply lacquer it. It doesn’t get the tyre removed or the black paint repainted.

Here's mine - pro model, magic blue and all options. Best car I've owned in 20+years of motoring and excellent tow car. Was shocked when Volvo pulled them from the UK lineup.
That’s bloody lovely. Would have loved something with all the toys. Budgets constrain however However, good news for you! V90 and V60 are back in the lineup for the UK. Confirmed by hq a couple of months ago - now available to order. My cousin asked me if I wanted one on finance for a massive discount (he works at Volvo) however not the right time for me.
Such an arse to park though in a narrow car park! Just too long, doesn’t even fit in the space at work. Without a camera its especially tricky as the sensors don't come on automatically upon selecting reverse - camera is first on the list

I’d never tried Pilot assist before or any kind of ACC let alone with steering. Simply wowed me , truly great thing to have.brillinat cars.

And yes no AdBlue!! Hooray!
That's a smart looking barge, and those seats look so inviting!
As someone already said I wouldn't rush to swap those tyres. I've had a set of Kumho Ecstas on my BMW Z4M for the last 3 years and they've been fine, although CCs would be better in wintry weather. But I don't use it in those conditions!
