I started the search for a big comfy diesel estate a few weeks ago. My work mileage is going to increase and 45p a mile in a 911 getting 17mpg wont be a great idea.
I started looking at E46 330Ds , F11 520Ds. I was pretty set on getting a BMW as they seem to be the best bang for buck when it comes to cheap estates. However i then noticed that Volvo estates could be had pretty cheap, so be it with high mileage.

This brings me to my purchase:

This is a 2015 V70 D4 2.0 with about 180hp. It has the 8 speed auto.

Now when I say its high mileage it is HIGH mileage. Its currently sits at 229,000 Miles. The car is in really good condition for its age, the seats a little worn but a lot better than you'd expect for the mileage. The plan is to run this as a cheap daily and see how many miles I can get it too.

The car had the same owner from when it was 6 months old and stacks and stacks of service history - including a recent cambelt and waterpump which is great to see. All serviced at the same garage who know it very well

Iv had it 2 days and its returning 50mpg and isn't too slow so I'm impressed so far.

A few things I need to sort are:
  • Aircon doesnt work
  • Passenger central locking is temperamental - can hear it working but isn't powerful enough . I'm hoping this is a worn solenoid.
  • Passenger side seat adjustment knob is missing for the reclining part
Apart from them everything from the electric tailgate to the heated seats work.

Iv been really impressed with the gearbox, its so smooth and you cant notice gear changes. But then knock it into sports and it completely changes characteristics.

Looks good OP, do really like these and yes they are popping up quite cheap now.

I had the same issue with locks on my past Volvo V60 same era (2013+) - needed a new locking mech (not cheap, and need Volvo/OEM part) - its a known issue on all Volvo's apparently - mine failed twice!

Will keep my eye on this thread as I love a good honest high miler, and these tick alot of family boxes.

IV done about 300 miles in the car over the last few days and it's definitely been handy to have. The cars been on tip run duty today as well as helping out a family member clear a lot of old metal and being it to the metal recycling place . With the seats folded down it really is rather big in the back. Does lack a bit of heigh though , I guess its because of the full size spare etc below the boot floor

Thanks, i'll have a go at getting a new locking mech and see if it fixes it. How hard was it to change?

I'm 10 days and 700 miles into ownership

To my surprise I'm absolutely loving it. There's something nice abut having a big comfy barge of a car, its such a contrast to my other loud and low down cars.

The car was made to earn its keep this weekend camping in the lake district. Id decided I didn't need a tent as the back of the V70 is big enough for an airbed. With only 2 of the seats folded down it fit a single airbed easily and it left me space for my belongings on one rear seat and the rest of the space in the boot

It worked really well , there was plenty of space and it was rather comfy. The electric boot is handy too as you can open it from the fob, meaning I can open it from the inside of the car

I'm planning on doing this again whilst its warm as its a great way to get out and about and explore new places.

I was also surprised that on the 200 mile round trip the car only used 1/4 tank of fuel. I averaged just over 50mpg which is good considering it was a mix of motorway and windy & hilly roads, plus I do have a very heavy right foot.

I managed to get some genuine Volvo roofbars on ebay and they had arrived home when I got home after camping, I got them installed and they seem to work well.
Ill be able to put my Thule bike carrier on as these are Volvo branded but they are just rebranded Thule bars, so they have the T track system (i think thats what they call it)

One thing I have noticed about the car over the last few days is that when the car is first started up after its sat for a day, the idle is rough, its like its hunting around. First thought was maybe its a vacuum leak but I couldnt seem to find one.

I then thought it would be handy to remove the EGR pipe and see how clogged up it was

I didn't take any photos of the before and after but there was a lot of carbon build up inside which I scraped off , looking at the throttle body there is a lot of carbon around that aswell. I'm gonna have a go at removing the throttle body this weekend and giving it a proper clean .

Starting the car up this morning the idle was very stable and didn't hunt around so maybe its a coincidence or maybe cleaning the pipe did solve it. Ill have to see if it returns

I didn't DIY it in the end, I had to take it to my mechanic, ordered the part from the local dealer.

It was the rear door lock, it eventually locked shut (not ideal with childseats, and constant access needed to the rear doors) - it required the door card to be removed - which is tricky with the door open, let alone it locked shut

Great choice OP. I picked up a high mileage XC70 19 months ago and I love it. 15 years old and does the daily duties very well.

We've had our 11 plate V70 D5 for almost 6 years now, a great car for our family duties and camping with 2 little ones.

Yours has a full size spare under the boot floor? Is it missing the underfloor compartment tray then because ours has a space saver, and I can't see how a full size would fit along with that.

Ours also has the same OE wing bars on the roof, I leave them on full time because they don't noticeably contribute to any wind noise or seem to effect the economy by any meaningful amount.

My bad, just checked and it is a space saver, so it has the underfloor compartment tray aswell

Is there another make of car that wears its miles as well as a Volvo? This looks lovely.

I picked up a 197k 2012 C class estate at BCA for £900. The seats aren’t even worn. I changed some control arms and arb links and it drives fantastic. I might do a post on here about it.

Id be really interested to know more about the c class, would be really interesting if you did do a post about it. I'm sure lots of others would be interested in it too

My father has always been a jag man and had an x type estate that got to 320k miles and an XF Sportbrake that got to 260k miles. The x type wore the miles well but the XF wore the miles even better, the drivers seat was hardly worn. The car ended up dieing due to water ingress than took out the main junction box (xfs are known for this) and due t the mileage it just wasn't feasible chucking a bunch of money at it. Thinking about it, the XF did need a new engine at around 200k as one day it randomly blew a hole through the bottom end despite having a prefect service history.

Good video on DIYing the door lock motors here…

It looks quite involved, but all makes sense once it’s apart. I renewed all four doors on mine with Chinese motors for around £20. I haven’t had any locking issues since then.

I think much depends on the owners, a lad I used to work with had an XC60 from new and at 60K it was tired. Creaking suspension, worn interior, you would have thought it had done 100K more.

Another lad I know recently got an 11 plate Insignia with 230K and it's excellent. Less issues than the OP is having with his V70.

Thankyou, I'm gonna try and take the door cards off at the weekend and see what needs replacing
