Despite owning this car for some time now, I've not bothered to start a thread on here and I'm not quite sure why. Maybe because it started out as purchase of daily smoker that I thought I'd only have for six months or so or maybe because I didn't think I would do much with it to warrant a thread on here unlike some of the other projects I've posted about on here.

Rewind back to October 2022 and while scrolling through Facebook one weekday lunch time a car for sale popped up in my feed which caught my attention so a few hours later and I was heading over to Basingstoke to take a look at a facelift Alpina B10 V8/1. I had been tentatively looking for one over the last few years and had viewed two prior to this one, the first was in back in 2020, a Sienna red or Royal red pre facelift saloon which turned out to have an X5 4.6iS block and rusty sills and in 2021 an Alpina blue facelift saloon which the seller and I couldn't meet on price wise despite the car needing work.

A few pics from the advert.

B10 V8/1 (the /1 denoting the facelift of the B10 V8) is number 81 finished in Jet black over Mugello red full nappa leather, it is one of 41 B10 V8/1 Saloons sold in the UK which makes it rarer than the later V8S.

Full spec below.

Having covered 149k miles, it had been looked after pretty well with a huge history file going all the way back to its first service. After an hour of going over the car and a road test a deal was done, money changed hands and I was heading home with #81.

After doing some research it turns out the car is a 1 of 1 in this colour combo and despite being a very marmite interior, its the main thing that attracted me to this car! Black over red is a classic combo and Jet black non metalic is much rarer on the E39 than metallic Sapphire black and again, red leather of any sort is pretty rare in an E39.

Superb, I've already owned four e39's; a 535i, two 540i's and an M5 but would still like to try an Alpina.

Fantastic, the red is a bit much for me but I can imagine this is a wonderful thing to waft along in. E39 design is just timeless IMO with the Alpina editions it looks stunning. As E39 M5s have gone mad in price these look like a better bet thumbup

What a colour combo, I love the black over red. First thing in the morning, it must be a bit, erm, eye opening?

It’s fabulous in its individuality. My E39 is grey slippers bland in comparison.

E39's along with E28's are the best looking 5's to me, To think the E39 is nudging 30 years old now but its one of those cars that doesn't feel it!

Glad to hear you are enjoying the new dampers on yours! Plenty done to mine already and more to come!

Thanks Dan! Unfortunately the collection is reducing due to the house being a money vacuum. The other E39's have gone.

They are addictive! I'm up to 15 and I'm sure it wont be my last.

The red will always divide opinion but it really is a nice place to be with all the extra leather when wafting along. I have owned a few E39 M5's and adore them but i think I actually prefer the way Alpina E39's look.

Its always looks brigher in photos than in real life but it certainly grabs your attention.

On the way home from collecting the car back in October 2022 a few things became apparent one of which was some judder under braking so upon closer inspection I found one of the front brake callipers was binding on and the discs and pads all round were not their best.

All four callipers and brackets were stripped down, blasted and painted satin black before being reassembled with new pistons, seals and bleed nipples. This were then refitted with all new genuine BMW pads, discs and parking brake shoes.

From memory the car was on a set of old Goodyears and Falkens which were past their best and the wheels while not ugly, were not mint so while the brakes were off, the wheels were sent to Lepsons for a refurb and came back as new shod with a fresh set of Michelin PS4S tyres.

New badges and foam pads completed the caps.

Once fitted I had the bonnet and bootlid painted as I wasn't happy with them and they polished the rest of the car to freshen it up a bit.

Then it was pressed into daily use!

Keeping company with a previous stablemate.

I’m not sure why, but initially the E39 I didn’t really like the look. However, it has aged really well and now looks sharp and crisp; couple that with an Alpine B10 V8, it’s going to have some urgency about it.

When it comes to the interior, DDR seems an acquired taste, not for everyone, but certainly different.

What a superb looking car, with the bahnstormer capabilities to back up the appearance.

OP in your profile, you list an E30, is there a readers thread for this car? If not, no worries.

Thanks! It does indeed get up and go when you want it to, Wafts along nicely too!

RE the E30's, my PH garage needs a bit of an update to be honest.

There are two E30's listed in there, my tech 2 325i Sport I've owned 18 years, there is no thread on here but there is a thread on E30zone but hasn't had an update in about 4 years. The E30 M3 is one I owned about 7 years and sold after completeing a nut an bolt resto on it. Thread below.

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

The mrs owns a chrome bumper 325i convertible too and I've recently gone halfs with my business partner on another E30 M3. A lot of other E30's have been and gone with me over the years.

Jan 2023

Dead pixels started to rear their ugly head so the cluster was sent to Keith at AK speedo for him to sort out.

The steering wheel was looking a bit sorry for itself after 150k miles so it was sent away to MPM trimming who were the only trimmers in the UK that could do the Alpina style straight stitch and arrows to a standard as good as Alpina. With #81 having extended red leather it also had red stitching on the steering wheel rather than the usual blue and green Alpinas have.
