2012 F10 BMW 535i M-Sport Touring
Discussion
So tomorrow morning I’ll be setting off early doors from Aberdeenshire in my 2010 Audi A6 Avant 2.0tdi and will be heading to Leeds to pick up its replacement, a 2012 535i Touring. I’ve spent the past few months looking at everything from Mk5/6 Golf GTi’s, Jag XF V8’s, Audi S5 Coupe/Sportback, Mercedes E500 Coupe etc, but I realised I’m just a big estate kind of guy (having owned quite a few over the years) so when this 5 series popped up on PH last week I made an enquiry and the deal was quickly done. As an aside, I follow bolidemichael’s E500 estate thread on here, and quite fancied one too spotting a nice one a few weeks back @ heelandtoe cars, but unfortunately my wife kyboshed the idea (she’s just not a Mercedes fan it seems).
Anyway, the Audi has been a great 2nd/3rd car these past 5 years, and while it has fallen into shed territory now it has continued to provide reliable service and has been very cheap to run (162K on the clock and still tight as a nut), but my wife and I missed the performance of our leased Leon Cupra ST, which was handed back in Feb last year, so after sticking the £307/m I was saving into my car fund for the past year I then set my sights on finding us something with a bit of oomph again, and the 535i should fit the bill nicely with 306bhp on tap (400nm torque). 370bhp and 550nm appears to be a simple remap away as well, which I like the sound of
So, on to the car itself…….this it in all its grey glory (with black leather interior). Not very adventurous I know but beggars can’t be choosers at this level I guess, and it's not a great photo either but I’ll add more after collection including the obligatory filling station shot!
I don’t know the colour code yet (perhaps a knowledgeable BMW expert can confirm) but from all the photos I’ve seen it seems to have worn its 128K miles well, with a fairly comprehensive mostly BMW SH to back it up, and a solid MOT history too, according to V-Check anyway. The dealer has stuck a fresh ticket on it, serviced it, and refurbed one of the alloys too as it fell below their standards, so with 12 months tax added tomorrow I’m hoping that will be most of the big expense items covered for the next year, aside from maybe picking up a set of winter wheels and tyres at some point before the snow arrives.
Spec wise it seems to be mainly standard M-Sport with a few extras on top….
19” alloys - £1210
Visibility package – £1255
Folding mirrors - £250
Electric front seats with driver memory - £920
DAB radio - £315
Adaptive headlights - £390
HUD - £992
Professional Multimedia Plus - £2740
BMW Professional Nav system - £2090
Xenons - £920
Brushed aluminium int trim - £240
Sport Auto Transmission - £1600
The forecast looks lovely tomorrow so hoping for a pretty uneventful drive down. I expect the roads will be a bit busier heading back being a Fri afternoon, but there’s no rush, and I’m planning to head over Glenshee and on to Braemar after I hit Perth to try the car on some nice driving roads before getting home.
Updates to follow.

Very nice, I think the colour might be Space Grey. I often think the estate versions of older BMWs age better than the saloons and this is definitely one!
I hope the N55 treats you well. That in my E92 has and is continuing to be a bit problematic.
MHD is well worth it if you want to experiment with tuning.

Really like the F11 tourings and that looks a good'un; sits well on those 351Ms too
That'll be hell of a drive back too Fantastic roads (only driven them in winter myself) as my folks have a property in Dunkeld

Thanks all, really looking forward to collecting it tomorrow and also getting into a BMW again. I had a nice 2003 325i Touring when my daughter was born in 2010, and I also a 1988 325i convertible in the 90’s which I loved. Missed them both.

Nice. Not many around with that engine; I had to go to Belfast to get my 535i Touring about a decade ago. I bet someone on here knows its history.
Best I ever saw was 38.5mpg and overall probably just under 30mpg; no idea how that would be affected by a remap.
Wishing you all the best with it!

Thanks Jobbo. Indeed they appear to be quite rare and none were coming up during my searches within budget until this one appeared, but it does tick almost all the boxes compared to other options I looked at so quite pleased to have found it.
MPG wise 30 will be acceptable, although less will be fine too as my wife now works a couple of miles from home after starting a new job earlier this year, so our household annual mileage has dropped quite considerably (her previous commute was 19 miles each way). She can use the Beemer a couple of days a week and I'll take her 2.0d family wagon, which won't be liking the short trip to her office.

Lovely looking car in that spec and colour. Anything noted in the history about replacement airbag rear suspension? From experience with my F11; water ingress (especially in winter), has caused havoc at the back end, blowing fuses and has the potential to leave you stranded. Anyway, I’d imagine a mighty impressive car you have there with that engine but be warned about the air suspension.
Thanks all.
The car is home
No real drama yesterday although I was a touch nervous driving down just in case there were any issues as it would have been a long frustrating journey home if I hadn't gone ahead with the deal, but the 535i was pretty much as described by the dealer and just as nice in the flesh as the photos I'd seen so all good. After a quick test drive out the Pontefract road and back the deal was done and my bank account is now a few £K lighter.
Filling station shot (£88 of BP's finest) and then I was off.
Google was showing a hell of a lot of red and yellow sections of motorway heading back via Glasgow so I decided to take the A1M to Edinburgh, which was the right decision as the roads were surprisingly clear for a Friday afternoon. I decided not to bother with the Glenshee option so my first chance to get a proper feel for the car on a twisty road was over Cairn o' Mount from Fettercairn to Strachan, and I wrung its neck for the next 20 minutes or so until I came up behind a car and caravan. Cracking evening for it too.
This is my first time driving a BMW with this engine and you really need to rev it to get the best out of it, which is great to do again after coming from a diesel. It doesn't feel particularly fast when the gearbox is in 'D', but put it is 'S' and take control using the paddles and it can fairly shift for such a big bus. Handles well too, even on less than premium rubber currently fitted. I arrived home a few minutes later with a smile on my face and a gently ticking bug splattered 535i in the drive
Jobs on the cards? Not many yet but I'm sure I'll find a few things to do.
It's going to need a really good clean first though after yesterdays drive, and under the bonnet is pretty filthy so I'll give that area a good scub too. I'm not really into detailing but I do enjoy cleaning and looking after my cars. The exhaust tips are filthy too which was really bothering me for some reason (probably because the rest of the car is so clean) so I'll be out with Autoglym products later

Yes there's an invoice for airbag replacement which was good to see, plus front and rear discs and pads have been done recently too. Will keep an eye out for water ingress as I've had that happen on a car before and it's a PITA.Edited by Pablo16v on Saturday 22 June 09:12

I’ll admire you for buying a car from so far away from home....I’ve done it a couple of times and bought a one way ticket to collect it having worked off photos and the hope the dealer is accurate isn’t heir description!! I’ve just agreed to buy a Merc from 100 miles away and the dealer has delayed collection due to a problem that has arisen in the pre-collection service.
I liken the 535 Touring to my 350 CLS Shooting Brake albeit I know the BMW is the more sporty option whereas I think the CLS is more akin to a “wafted”....I’ll watch with interest your thread as I would have bought a BMW 5 series touring but my head got turned by the CLS

Looking at the options, what does visibility package give you over adaptive lights and xenons? Just wondering as you have almost £2500. of light options that I would expect on a car like that, or do BMW do this to keep the base price of the car low and almost everything is an option?

Good question.Edited by Ianbe46m3 on Saturday 22 June 16:05
Google throws up this from 2012...
Visibility package contains: Adaptive Xenon Headlights, headlight wash, rain sensor with automatic headlight activation, rear-view mirror with automatic dimming function and High-Beam Assistant.......so not sure if the above options prices the dealer supplied are correct.
Just a little bit of cleaning today to get all the bugs off the front and I had a go at the engine bay too. Just some hot soapy water but happy with the results.
Main key fob needs a new battery according to the car so I'll do that tomorrow, and I'll also be investing in a new pair of wiper blades. Was caught in a heavy shower this afternoon and while the drivers side is fine the passenger one is not great.
MPG wise I averaged 29.3 on a twisty b-road blast this afternoon which was 15 miles each way. There was a few minutes of playing in sport mode with the paddles but then got held up with slower traffic and popped it back into D, so the MPG could have been a bit lower had I spent more time pressing on. I'll get another chance to give it a welly later tonight though, as I have to go into Aberdeen to pick up my daughter and a pal from the cinema around 11pm so hopefully quiet roads

I've gone to Edinburgh and Glasgow in the past, and even went up to Inverness for a SAAB 9-5 estate, but aye it was a bit nerve wracking driving down to Leeds yesterday as I kept thinking 'what if the deal falls through for some reason' but it just couldn't have gone any smoother really. It's funny you should mention the Shooting Brake as I had initially given myself a much higher budget and the Euro 6 ones were popping up in my searches, but after coming over all sensible and knocking a few £K off only the older Euro5 ones came up and I didn't want to swap one Euro5 diesel for another (Aberdeen now has a LEZ and I do have to go in from time to time). They are cracking value though and lovely looking motors.
Great car OP. Impeccable taste
We bought one about a year ago.

As you say, there really aren't many of them around. I got very lucky with mine as I decided to buy one and found our's the same day and it was a near perfect spec for me but it was the only one for sale at the time and you rarely see more than one or two on the market at a time.
Really impressed with our's so far. We've had the odd niggle but the only serious thing is a leaking driver side headlight which I still haven't sorted. It's a common issue on these and there isn't really a cheap/easy fix. I'll end up having both of mine resealed at some point which I'm not looking forward to.
It's a perfect family car for us. Big enough for any scenario we use it for. Very comfortable and plenty to keep me interested when I'm on my own on the right roads. It doesn't feel explosively quick though (I guess 2 tonnes will see to that!) but it's always effortless. I would be interested to see if you go down the remap route as it is something I'm thinking about.
I'm about to embark on a gearbox oil change on our's too which is something that's always worth considering for some peace of mind.
Oh and if so inclined, I can highly recommend an andream replacement screen. Transforms the car having apple carplay etc.
