I've been on the trail of this car for the best part of two years, finally last week current owner decided a new home had to be found for it

now at this point we have now got 7 cars at the house and i didn't need the extra project but you just cant turn down the opportunity sometimes

there is method in my madness, my dad owned one of these in 1999, eventually the car was traded in and he was gutted. it only went as it was too low to get my gran in and out in her later years. i managed to track the car down and had it when i was 18. that car met a untimely end and that was that for the next 20 or so years

periodically we would keep an eye out what was knocking about but they were always rotten, smoking engines etc.....

now my dad is still suffering with long covid and has gone from full time employment to early retirement and not very active. this car will give him something to do and were hoping to get it up to standard and hit a few shows before its too late and we cant spend any time doing the things we enjoy together anymore

so that's the sentimental reasoning behind the purchase

ill cut to the chase why we have bought this one

and yes that's a genuine 28k miles from new!

underneath is solid and engine purrs away

arrived on back of a recovery truck as mot lapsed and it was in Somerset, seller great guy to deal with honest description, nice video to help me get a feel for it

plans are good clean, jack it up figure out what's what, major service, cambelt, water pump, thermostat and radiator, coolant flush etc...

worst bit is the bodywork has taken a bit of a battering over its 27 years on this earth and will require some paint but arches and sills are good which is a big bonus

and it lives on the drive with its new best mate

the puma is my dads

Completely forgot about these.
Guy near me had one of these many years ago along with a Nissan 100NX, always looked a quirky pair.

Are they all that colour and P reg? never seen one in any other colour or any other plate!

is it perspective or is it really that small. a Puma is tiny, but that's miniscule!

love it.

I believe the Paseo was based on the Starlet, so pretty small. I remember them not being particularly rated as drivers cars at the time, but this project proves there's far more to a car being special than just performance. I do miss small coupes from the 90/10s, all the manufacturers seemed to have one, then it was coupe cabriolets, ultimately killed by small crossovers.

This is odd, I was thinking of these the other day then today I saw one when I was coming home from work and it was the same colour and year!

I always thought they looked great! They reminded me of the Honda Civic Coupe, another car I really liked the look of.

I wish you well with your project, and that it helps your Dad too. thumbup

That looks ace, have looked at them (and sera’s) over the years but never managed to get one. Had a Celica GT in the same colour. Enjoy.

yes not every project has to be a drivers car. they actually handle quite well as did the starlet from similar years.

i agree although biased always liked the shape really needed the spoiler and a set of alloys, no alloys or spoiler makes them look really odd

sera was a odd ball car loved them back in the day, unfortunately most paseo have been eaten up by the tin worm and because they weren't particularly popular most were deemed not worth saving and scraped

got an hour on this today. there's just not enough hours in the day these days for me!

had a look at why the new aux belts were squeaking the power steering belt adjuster was missing a bolt so I've ordered a m10x1.25 28mm bolt so i can tension the power steering pump without it cocking over. the new alternator belt that's been fitted has shredded due to the build up of the old belt dust. i will remove this belt and clean the alternator pulley and casing to remove all the dust

belt and bolt cost me less than £15 so happy with that once that's sorted can get the engine bay cleaned up and run the engine up to temp, will whip the top cambelt cover off and inspect belt

having a look around the engine bay it is in a better condition than it has any right to be in after 27 years. a good clean and a refresh of a few components will bring the engine bay back to former glory

having a look over the car noticed a small ingress of water at the rear traced this to the rear lights letting water in so thought it was wise to attack this before winter sets in properly

again it has come up really well no rust and will be treated to some lanoguard asap

its been nice to pull something apart and the quality of parts used are built to last. the gaskets on the rear lights are good quality cleaned up well and been refitted with some silicone spray

a car cover will more than likely be bought to try and keep the worst of the winter off it

Great stuff.

You never saw many about, although there's a fairly low mileage one in white quite near me.
