2004 Volvo V50

Following the death of my Zafira... I needed a replacement workhorse. This time I wanted a diesel and I wanted a 6 speed box. Don't know why. Just did.
Anyway.... I was doing the school run in the wife's focus, while parked up I started scrolling on marketplace and that's when this car popped up... 04 Volvo V50 2.0 manual 6 speed. £700.


It's dirty. Very dirty.

It needs a few small jobs doing... Like a new headlight bulb, some new number plates and the headlining pinning back up.

But for a running, driving and MOTd car for £700 who cares
Got a list of jobs to do on it so will update as I get them done.

200 miles in so far.
Headlight bulbs changed - osram night breakers now in.

Two part worms fitted on the front Pirelli P7s both for £74 fitted with 6mm tread on each. Can't moan at that.
Previous owner has rounded the lug nuts though, tyre fitter managed to get them on and torqued but will need new ones. Gonna bin the locking wheel nuts while I'm at it.
Other than that - nothing to report. In for another shift tonight, another 150 miles easily.

Can't beat a Volvo estate for load-lugging duties 
Does the V50 have the same wheelnut issue as most Ford products of that time where it's a chrome cap in effect over the nut? Which deforms over time or corrodes underneath, then rounds off?
I saw similar on a neighbour's 2014 C-Max when I did the brakes for them, and I had the same nonsense on my XFR before I swapped those to 1-piece nuts.

Does the V50 have the same wheelnut issue as most Ford products of that time where it's a chrome cap in effect over the nut? Which deforms over time or corrodes underneath, then rounds off?

Yep. They were completely mullered. Surprised the tyre fitter managed to get them off and back on if I'm honest. All being replaced for ones without those stupid caps, so should I ever have a blowout I won't have any issues.

Even if you get the winter out of it and scrap it next year, it's still a cheap car! That was my theory when I bought one, an 07 plate 2.0D Sport and paid about £1200 for it on the basis it'd be a reasonable stop gap car. That was over 6 years ago now and about 60k and it's still with me, still hanging on in there and to be honest, I'm loathed to part with it. It's just one of those "does it all" cars but for minimal money - even with a remap, it'll return 50mpg without fuss and being Focus based, nothing is that difficult or dear. I've had a few niggles - usual CEM issues, rear shock mounts, leaky oil pressure sensor and it's been through wear and tear stuff like lower arms, drop links, track rod ends and the like but it's never actually failed. Decent sheds!
Fitted a dash cam today after a VERY close near miss a few days ago. Went for a Road Angel Halo Go.

Tucked up nicely behind the mirror, forget it's even there sometimes. Currently on a USB cable but do have the hardwire kit and will get around to sorting it when I get time to nip down the garage next.
Had a slow leak on the front passenger side tyre, was going flat overnight. Took it back to the tyre fitter and he found it was a dodgy valve - new one fitted no arguments. Also changed front wheel nuts and buggered off the locking nuts completely.
Rear locking nuts have rounded off
so it's booked in for those to be taken off next Wednesday.
Currently on 156670 miles. Will likely do another 200 miles by Monday. No notable issues so far.
