After realising I have done over 6k miles in 4 months in my E92 M3, I concluded that I needed to do what I had originally set out to do: buy a good long distance car.

Thanks to recommendations in the other place, I was alerted to a car in Glasgow.

I have never owned a diesel, but paying for petrol v8s to pound up and down the motorway network, it seemed time to give one a try. Gave this chap a call, and his story checked out.

It's a Mercedes S320 CDi long wheel base. I like the colour. I think it's an early car, but it seems to be fairly well specified. And it's not silver. While I hate to admit it, the engine makes sense in this car. I don't even dislike the noise. I've been pretending to be a trucker.

It was within the £1-5k budget, has 95k miles, and drives very well indeed.

The AC needs sorting, and one day I might refurb the alloys. Maybe.

Mental that it's below £5k and 100,000 miles, that's a proper bargain and looks really good still. I think this is the same V6 diesel I had in my old E class, mine was a bit gruff but absolutely solid.

Devil's fuels as you say, but it's a great looking thing and amazing interior too!

It does seem smoother than the same unit in the Es and CLSs I have been in - I guess there's more soundproofing.

This one seems to be in excellent condition (as described, amazingly) and rattle free. Some good chunky bills from a merc specialist as well.

The colour and panoramic roof seem to make it seem less dated than a standard silver one.

Heated and cooling seats in the front, heated reclining seats in the rear. You can roll the front seat forward like in my old LS. Lots of other buttons I need to investigate.

This is why I bought it.

I’m piloting my own Uber lux.

Excellent. Can you do a pick up in NW10 on Wednesday at 18.30? Going to Loftus Road.

Seriously, though, an incredible amount of car for thr money. Well bought.

People seem to be put off these by the perceived complexity, which is fair. However, if you have a decent fighting fund to run one, I can’t see anything that beats it for the money as a long-distance wafter.

Nice choice.

Engine will be fine.

Has it got ABC suspension? If I undestand it it's Airmatic + some form of hydraulic self levelling malarky. Can be spendy. Worth looking at the history to see id any if it has been changed in the padt.

Good luck, my neighbour has a standard wb S320d almost identical to yours, it spends more time broken than on the road.

Perfect candidate for a £250 dateless plate and it would take years off it.

I suspect a 'vape' plate might appear before too long?

I shall follow with interest. These have been tempting me with their smoker barge potential for a while.

These long wheel base ones are vastly more reliable
