A few weeks ago I decided it was better to have loved and lost, than not to have loved at all - and let the LC500 go. angel
(Thread here: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... )

I needed something equally quick, but a lot easier to live with on narrow, rural lanes; enter the Supra! driving

The A90 was not on my radar at all, I'd never given one a second glance until the dealers stock list popped up with what seemed like a too-good-to-be-true offering: A summer 2022 A90 Supra, in black and with 218 miles on the clock! A few calls and emails back and forth resulted in a test drive, and that basically sealed the deal!

The driving experience was as close to an Rx7 TII or FD as I have experienced in decades - a decent manual gearbox mated to 335bhp of turbo assisted power to the rear wheels, all wrapped up in a tight, nimble body. (...which I lack the dexterity and body shape to match!)

If you get the chance to have a drive of one, I urge you to do so!

The DNA and aftermarket following for this version of the Supra is just as strong as ever, and the BMW B58 engine responds very well to supporting modifications and re-maps, so that is on the agenda very soon.

For the last week it has been in the capable hands of SW Autoworx, (same firm that did my LC and the Defender) for a full clean, detail, correction and IGL Kenzo ceramic coating; they also sourced and fitted the Akrapovic slip on titanium silencer for me. On it's own the Akrapovic doesn't add much, if anything in the way of volume - but it does give a much deeper, richer exhaust note. (However, once further down the tuning path this will enable me to run some other mods without ending up with something totally anti-social...well at least that's my plan at the moment!)

Anyway, on to the pics! cloud9

Very nice. cool

I could definitely see myself in one of these too, and I've always liked them. I got to look around one when they first came out and I was left very impressed by them. Credit to Toyota for doing a manual version as well I reckon.

Absolutely love these, I'd get the wheels coloured silver just to break up the whole black on black thing but apart from that it's tip top.

Enjoy.

Congratulations and glad you're enjoying it, very underrated IMO.

Had mine (2020 Auto car) for 6 months and love it. Whilst it's a second car, I find myself using it as much as possible and putting far more miles on it than any other weekend cars I've had.

Mine replaced a F-Type V6 and whilst it doesn't have the same raw character, it's a better car in every other way. Handling is on a different level, much more suited to UK country roads, the engine is phenomenal, far faster than the stats suggest, loads of modern tech, relatively low running costs and of course the unique looks. Gets a lot of attention. Suspect it will be a keeper. Love the aftermarket and tuning scene too.

Car has a few small flaws, but nothing that can't be resolved with a few minor\cheap tweaks, like the wind buffeting and subwooder issues. Very much looking forward to building an OEM+ car,

Very practical too smile

Love these, managed to get an 'extended' test drive in a manual when they were released and was very tempted by it, one of these or an Alpine A110 would do very nicely.. Enjoy OP cool

I increasingly think I really like these, as odd as it sounds.

Has to be the manual version however.

Will follow with interest. Lovely car.

Love it, manual and I wouldnt be able to resist tuning it either, Downpipe, intake, exhaust, Sports cat, map etc and you are at over 500 bhp.

They quote them as 335 but that is way under quoted, nearer 400 than 300, out of the box.

Very nice.

We were parked behind a yellow one with a body kit on it on the Shuttle going to Le Mans this year.

Didn’t realise they did the 3ltr in manual I thought it was only going to be the 2ltr getting the manual gearbox. Might have to have another look.

Either way nice car OP

Thanks for sharing, do keep up the thread as you get to know the car more.

Ah, that was exactly why I was interested in the A90 last year - a car that drives like the FD, but with Toyota reliability and new-car warranty. Unfortunately my local dealer didn't have one available to test drive at the time - they actually rang this week to say they've finally got a car in stock. However I've gone in another direction in the meantime...

If you do get the chance to really push the car (somewhere safe), I'd be v interested to hear about its balance on the limit, where to me the FD really shone.

Enjoy, looks great and sounds like a lot of fun!

After having seen one of these in person I think they are so much better off screen and have a huge amount of presence. I'd love a go in a manual to understand how much better Toyota have made their gearbox compared to the BMW manual gearboxes I am used to.

V nice, and would have one on a future shortlist too. Would be good to drive a manual as I’ve had a go in the new Nissan Z400 manual, and whilst it’s a good car, that didn’t wow me. I think the Supra will be different.

And I do like the looks too - there’s one that lives the next street over from me, and also a red one nearby.

Looking forward to your views after some miles!

Thanks for the kind words all, I'll update as things start to come together over the coming weeks.

As it stands a few parts are now on order that will enable a "stage 2" tune. (When did it start getting called stages?!) This is basically a full deCAT, less restrictive intake and a damn good mapping. That should net nigh on 500bhp at the engine, which will be plenty for what is a weekend car/toy. (Something like 300hp/ton?)

I'm also considering a pair of stripes in the same gun metal grey as the wheels - although I historically have shied away from any kind of cosmetic changes on cars...

If you are every in the South West, give me a shout and I'll chuck you the key - although I expect it will feel a bit low rent vs the McLaren! hehe (It definetly doesn't have the LC500 level of luxury either!)

I've known tuning to be in stages for years. A close mate of mine had 2 Sapphire Cosworths and they were both "stage 1" tuned to 270bhp.

Your Supra will be an absolute flying machine with 500bhp I reckon. smokin
