Due to "circumstances" I found myself in need of a cheap runaround to get me and swmbo through Christmas. First looked at hire cars, but thought fk that for over £500 for a weeks hire. Headed over to autotrader to review cars under £1k, and up popped an 09 Alfa 147 JTDM 8V Collezione 3dr. Paint on the passenger side is a bit manky, probably why the car was Cat D in its first three years, but the rest of it is flawless. Apart from the gearshift not homing properly/at all rofl. 105k miles and the seat leather is fking impressive.

Anyway, I am now officially a petrol head as I own an Alfa.

I will update this as and when the fker breaks down. It only needs to last two weeks to be worth the cost of a rental to be fair, so really not expecting too much, but happy to be surprised.

6 speed F40 gearbox? Might need the turret repair doing, there's kits on ebay if you're handy with the spanners: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ML3kfGvQHa4

It is the 5 speed, and not massively interested in fixin st on a shed right now, even the wife can drive it like a champ after a short drive. Will have a look to see what is economical though

Nice one.

I shedded in a 147 for 10 months during lockdown having bought one for £450, it served me well and I sold it for £750.

It is so fking comfy. Might sell the VXR8 and just drive this tbh. Or if I sell it, it will at least return me what I paid for it. Tax/Insurance/Fuel will be the only costs.

I had an Alfa GT diesel (basically the same car as your 147) as a daily driver shed - it was easily the most comfortable car I’ve owned or driven. 10 hour days yielded no aches or pains at all. The driving position was excellent and the seats were amazing.

It had done 268,000 miles when I part-ex’d it and the only sign was that the seats were a bit shiny and the pedal rubbers were worn smooth.

Honestly, the seats are pristine, much nicer condition than my VXR8 at half the miles. It does not look driven

I had that issue in my 147, the gear cables needed adjusting, got it done for free in 20mins at a citroen dealer (who I use for my citroens) mechanic said that checking what the problem was and fixing it were nearly the same job so no charge (I'll get you next time).

The Alfa 8v derv is a good reliable engine, 147 is not the worst thing to shed in.

Looks great. I would agree with comfy seats as well, I have an Alfa 159, very comfy, and supportive, also they're in better condition than the leather in my previous Jag XJ, that was 2018 with 50k miles, the 159 is 2010 and 90k miles. The bolsters look like new.

Look forward to following how you get on with the 147!

Yup, had a GT. I still idly ponder those seats to this day and I've had a Volvo S60, Mondeo and now a Merc E class. Hands down the best seats I've ever had and by a long way.

Great cars, also

Alfa leather seats from around that era feel good and very durable.

I have a 1998 gtv with 160k miles and apart from some wear on the bolster from probably jeans rubber the seats look and feel like new.

I looked at this one few years ago it was £800 or there about and before I bought a Giulietta. Was one lady owner and full MOT and had that Caramac leather and needed the front bumper repainted. I think it sold within a day on AT which is something for an Alfa as they are still notoriously hard to sell.

Just had a look and it's taxed but failed it's MOT in May this year and hasn't been sorted so maybe I dodged a bullet.

Bugger. Left the sidelights on last night and just had a call from the wife that it now won't start after she got back to the car after walking the dog. AA on their way and have prioritised her as a lone female and the dog also needs feeding. Hopefully it is just a jump start/new battery and she should be on her way. Think the battery is probably in pretty poor condition having been sat in the dealers lot over the recent very cold weather.

AA got there in about an hour and confirmed dead battery. Least it is not a big bill.

This car is getting under my skin.It is so much fun. Looking forward to driving down to Penzanze next week in it to see how good it is at long distance driving.

Yeah shouldn’t be. I had to have a new battery and then the main computer thing failed which was the cause of the battery being drained. Miss driving around with the car alarm going off randomly !
Happy days.

They’re great cars, so much better than the equivalent Focus or Astra in my opinion. The gearstick not centralising is an easy fix, it’s a couple of “top hat” bushes on the gear selector that controls the side to side movement. Very cheap and easy to change. I bet you won’t sell it when the time comes.
