So so so.... The M4... Been my dream for a good while, it was always the E46 M3 but we move with the times... I'll try and keep it short so this isn't overly boring!

I am anal with specs of cars, I spent over 6 months looking for this car, I wanted Yas Marina Blue Colour, white leather interior, 6 speed manual, well spec'd and a Competiton pack. To this day I've not come across another to this spec. I've drove many autos / DSG cars etc... even a DCT version of this car before opting for the manual. I just find them boring, I don't gel with them the same, it subtracts from the driving experience from me, and control you have as a driver. I am a manual man, it's just how it is, and it won't change.

Purchase info:
BMW M4
Competition Pack
6 Speed Manual Gearbox
Yas Marina Blue
HK Audio
360 Camera
M Performance Exhaust System
OEM Side Skirts
OEM Splitter
M Performance Interior Pack (Handbrake / gear gaitors + M peformance steering wheel + interior mats)

The only thing the car doesn't have is the Head Up Display, because of the leather dash option (not sure on specific option name)

I paid £42k from a private seller
It had 11k miles when I bought it in May 2021
It now has 20k miles in October 2022.

The rear diff oil seals blew within 1 month of having the car
The headlight and rear light seals are crap, they let in condensation, BMW offered to pay 50% of the cost to replace the oil seals, and lights, I declined as the price was stupid. They offered to help on costs given the car was 4 years old, and had done 11k miles... that just should not happen to a vehicle apparently as prestigious as this... but we move.

I also don't like the electric steering rack, it lacks feel and feedback vs a hydrolic rack. Build quality is also a bit to be desired for vs previous BMW generations of car.

The in car HK audio system is absolutely fantastic, even surpassing my Mark Levinson system in my Lexus which I thought was the best i'd ever had.

Overall, I absolutely love the car, it does everything effortlessly, it's very fast, sounds amazing, comfortable, and overall not TERRIBLE on fuel, it'll do high 20's on a motorway, and it'll do low 20's round town. Drive like michael schumacher and it'll do 18 mpg odd.

You also can't go anywhere without people stopping to talk to you or pass comment about the car, especially when it's clean. For whatever reason, it just seems to be loved, maybe it's the colour as it really does pop when clean

The hotwheels toy of your dream car

It's done 1 track day round Donnington last year.

It done a car show last year too

Weekend toy and the track car

Any questions fire away.... i've owned this car for nearly 18 months and done a fair mix of activities / miles in it. I'll try and keep this thread updated also.

I am based in Liverpool, and will be using DRW Performance for future servicing / work req.

You can have HUD with leather dash.

Lovely car. A friend has a M4, I had a little drive, too stiff for me to live with but great for a short drive.

Indeed, great car in a nice spec but the sooner you get tugged for the embarrassing number plate, the better for us all.

Nice. And super rare.

It is brillant that you bought privately at that kind of price point. You probably didn't have much choice. Shame the owner didn't extend the warranty.

Which seals blew? The input one or the output ones? Was that after the track day?

You aren't wrong, but hey! It's not a big job to put a proper one on.

The buying experience privately for that amount of money was in short, a nightmare, I would not recommend. Also because I'd spent months looking for this paticular car, when it came up for sale I just had to gamble with the purchase.

It was well before the track day the dif seals went, it was about 3 weeks after purchase I started noticing the oil drips on the path, and the rear diff was covered.

I'm not too sure on specifics, so i'll describe. It was where the CV boot sort of rubber seals come out from the diff on each side, they were rubber O rings, these areas were leaking oil. Cost me around £400 at the stealership to fix.

In regards to the plate hate, I really don't get it lol. I've never been pulled over them in over 12 months of driving it. It's just 'show plates' with different letter spacing as it's a private plate. ANPR cameras still read the same so I don't get the issue.

I really like the leather on the dash/door tops/glovebox on these. It really helps to lift the cabin I reckon, and it gives them a much more upmarket feel.

Ha, was going to say the same thing. It sure is a wonderful spec but the numberplate does let it down a bit. Also is the splitter meant to be colour coded?Looks alright, but thought it'd be black.

That's the output seals. Out of interest was the £400 after the 50% contribution that you mentionned?

My input seal failed and it cost me £300 at an indy. Not a big deal but it is partially my fault for downgrading the warranty to named components which excludes seals grrrr.

That’s a lovely colour combo; Yas Marina Blue with white leather is one of my favourite combinations. A manual M4 is a rare beast, especially with a decent spec too. Shame that you’ve had a few issues with it.

Have been curious about manual F82s for some time - have you driven an E46 M3? If so, what do you think of the two back to back in terms of driving fun and engagement?

The comp pack looks like mega value new compared to the premium I keep seeing cars claiming to have it command.

I was thinking about an M2, but these are similar cash, and seem more car.

You say you were spec specific OP, what were your absolute must-haves? And what else came with it that you didn't necessarily want, but think is worth having?

If you're after a manual and can live with 2 doors, the M2 is exactly the same size and weight as a E46 M3 so that could be a better benchmark.

Gorgeous car. Exactly what I'll be replacing my 330i with at some point hopefully.

In relation to the above, if you do get pulled and warned about it, be wary. If you were caught a second time with the misspaced plate, the traffic officers can and do apply to the DVLA to have the registration number permanently withdrawn. I'm not a fan of misspaced plates, but each to their own I say. PH does have a particularly strong view on them though laugh

No, the £400 wasn't inclusive of the 50% contribution. They would only include the 50% contribution with the bundled fix of the rear lights also because of failed seals. So it would be the rear diff seals, and the lights, they would then offer the 50%, but I declined the lights and opted just the diff seal fix. This was Williams in Liverpool. They are a god awful garage, probably the worst in my experience of stealerships. (i've had 2 bmw's prior n had to visit there a number of times over the years). Never ever go there, for anything ever. I could write a seperate thread about my experiences with them.

I don't find the build quality too great on this F Series of BMW. Doesn't really seem like it's built to last vs other generations. I have a 2010 Lexus IS220d and I feel like I could drive through a brick wall in that, the BMW just feels a little flimsey to me at times.

No I haven't but I would absolutely love to. I think the old S54 3.2 naturally aspirated lump paired with a hydrolic steering rack would be 100% more engaging and fun vs these cars.

The M4 is effortlessly fast and pretty much great at everything, however it's so well engineered as a tool, they've engineered out a lot of the fun and drving experience for me. I don't think you could match what the E46 M3 has to offer personally from an experience.

I would say the M Performance Exhaust, it sounds absolutely great, and just suttle aesthetic mods like the interior M Performance bits, exterior side skirts and splitter. These suttle things really set the car apart from other M4's. I think without the interior mods also (steering wheel, extended leather dash, gaitors etc) the inside is a little too similar to a regular 4 series, and which for a car as prestigious as this i'd be wanting a little bit more for my money.

Here is a link to what the car sounds like on a cold start and a few light revs given it's cold:
