Mercedes Red Pig tribute
Discussion
The Rote Sau, or Red Pig was destroyed testing fighter jet landing gear and tyres way back in the 70's. Growing up I'd always admired that car, the one that set AMG on its way, so when I came across an ad for a South African car that was halfway there, I couldn't resist. Engine is a 5.6 V8 with all running gear and brakes upgraded.
Interior is gutted, roll cage is being made now period bucket seats are done, Penta alloys are nearing completion as they were special order for the rears at 10J wide, bodywork is next big thing. I had some brackets made for the spotlights and mocked up the front end as I needed to arrive at the number plate position as I intend to make this one road legal. Here's the start of it.
This is what I'm aiming at.

I’ve been here before with other old Mercs so I have a few people I can rely on. My metal fabricator is making my front number plate bracket after just finishing the steering wheel boss. I got a cheap..ish item from an auto jumble a few months ago, apparently Chinese made, but it has the right look and feel for me. No adapter plates onto the Merc splines were available so we started here:
Arriving at sizes.
A 25mm MDF disc to mock up wheel and column distance from my seated position.
Mild steel boss turned out, drilled and fitted to Steering wheel.
It needed a good chamfer to meet the Merc original column.
Next up will be the central horn push behind the ‘71 centre pad.

I suspect it’s Imperial Red (code 582) as it’s a mid-90s car.
Jupiter Red, (code 589) seems to be on much later models.
Great project by the way - I did at one point approach a company to make a decal set for my (Imperial) rot sau, but decided against it.
There was a chap (with the Mercedes club) who heavily modified a W123 with a 5.6 litre V8, to the extent it wasn’t road legal, but it actually looked pretty silly.
Your project will be fabulous - good luck.

Thanks Micky, I have to do this on a budget and these projects can look exactly like they’re done cheaply, but I’ve done a few 60’s Mercs now and I’ve got a good team. This is very much a cooperative effort but everyone’s enthusiastic and pitching in with sound advice. Colour info is very helpful.
