2015 Range Rover SDV8 Vogue SE, my very own Brave Pill
Discussion
I thought I'd start a readers cars thread as I have just purchased my very own Brave Pill.
Now normally a 6 year old car with 60K on the clock and a full history is nothing too adventurous but I have decided to buy an L405 Range Rover.
I scoured the internet, read all the horror stories, listened to the sage advice of all and still decided that for what I want from a car nothing interested me as much as the Range Rover. I considered various VW products (Cayenne, Touareg, Q7) and the BMW X5 (F15 shape). I even looked at the affordability of a Bentayga but these are still out of reach.
The brief was to have a family car, as capable on long runs as my old F10 530d was but can tow, works well in the countryside where I am and is a really nice place to be.
Other Land Rover products were considered but the way Range Rovers depreciate there is little to choose between a Discovery and a Range Rover for the same age and mileage so why not have the best?
I went and viewed the car in the rain and test drove it on a mix of country roads and motorway and found it to be everything I was looking for. A blemish on the driver's head rest which looks like dye transfer from hair, and a few other issues were discussed but I am quite pleased with the deal I got.
It came from 'Twelve London Road' car sales near Woking and I pick it up on Wednesday once some remedial bits are done and final prep happens.
Given the horror stories that abound I plan to keep a log here of how I use the car, how much it actually costs me and what pitfalls and lessons I learn in case anyone else fancies one.

The small dent in the tailgate is to be sorted for sale.

Nice and I do like the shape of these.
BUT I don't think a 60k 6 year old motor is really much to worry about unless your car background is leasing something new every 2 years.
I run a 134k 11 year old LR product and don't feel particularly brave! But then my other cars are 27, 26, 25 and 8 years old.

Sticklegs great choice. I purchased my first RR a RRS that’s 6yrs old for similar money from a franchised dealer in May. I too worried about dropping £30k on an older RR so got mine with warranty it’s done 42k and has electric side steps and pan roof. Ours is the full drug dealer spec though. They are a fantastic place to be.
I do love a FFRR though with clear glass and light wheels. This generation of RRS and FFRR look so good.

A good PH friend bought a used '15 RRV8 Autobiography from a main LR dealer with FSH & warranty and about 30k miles. The car was absolutely lovely with low miles and a great colour combination. Unfortunately the bottom end went on the engine after about 2 months though the warranty picked the full cost and also sorted an AC compressor issue that developed whilst it was away. I wouldn't run a car of that cost without a warranty although appreciate that most after market warranties have plenty of "wriggle room" in favour of the wty company!
I hope the OP has found a good one and it helps shake off some of the bad press JLR have had on reliability.

Thanks all.
Yes that’s right I went to look at an Aintree Green L322 but once I experienced the L405 I was smitten.
Factor in that the L405 is the one Mrs. Stick prefers, so will be more tolerant of failure, and I get a newer / more expensive car, the man maths won the day!
Mine hasn’t got the LR warranty, but an happy to go with the 12 month ‘listed item’ Warranty from the dealer & self insure the rest.
Warranty-wise quoted £490 a year to keep up the major mechanical warranty which I’ll do once the dealer one runs out.
I’m at sea right now, picking it up on Wednesday on my way home. Can’t wait.

The only SUV I'd buy, apart from (maybe) a Macan. But while my leafy bit of Surrey is choc full of RR, there's nowhere near me that needs 4x4 and I have nothing that needs towing, so I can't make the maths add up. But then I got a C grade in maths in my GCSEs, so I was doomed before I even started.

Had a Macan as a courtesy car a few weeks ago, have you driven one? Awful thing, nice looking from the outside but too many buttons inside and (it was a V6 petrol) drove awfully. RR every day of the week. AB said:

The worst thing about a Range Rover are the Range Rover dealerships.
I purchased the wife an Evoque some years ago as she had her heart set on one. The problems it had for a year old car where surprising, however the dealership were on another level all together.
Sadly we sold it after 8 months and 3,000 miles not because of the crap build quality or the faults it would bring up on a weekly basis, but the shyte dealership Experience.
If I was offered a Landrover product for free I would turn it down, just so I didn’t have to visit the dealers.

The best part of a not new Range Rover is you can use the specialists, avoid the dealer and get a mechanic who knows what they are doing...The worst thing about a Range Rover are the Range Rover dealerships.

As I will be doing.I deliberately bought out of the whole ‘main agent’ experience.
A friend who runs a garage & is used to spannering post 2010 XF/XJ’s & lots of L322 experience plus a trusted independent Land Rover specialist in the town should see me right.
