So, I've been on pistonheads a while now, lurking....

I spend a lot of time browsing readers cars, i'm a serial tinkerer, a good build thread is my favourite, followed by a road trip.

i have a relatively large car history, compared to some PH'ers though, i am but krill in their whale teeth.

Im now 34 years of age, (shocking to see that in print) an have owned 32 cars! its an addiction that started as a child, watching an helping my dad repair countless old cars, Capri's and old saab 99/900's were their thing. Im a mechanical engineer by trade but currently have nothing to do with the automotive industry.

i fiddle with cars and DIY for the JOY?! of it and to save myself money i guess...

So onto the cars, a brief description of each, which if anyone cares i can elaborate in a future post.

VW Polo saloon (coupe)
C reg bought with a failed headgasket, i was 14, it was £30!
Armed with a second hand haynes manual, some parental guidance and basic tools, it was repaired and sent on for £300.

Nova trip 1.0
My first road legal car, just passed my test at 17, it was £125 with tax and test! it was slow but the handbrake worked, it had a peco big bore and it looked like an SRi if you were visually impaired.

Corsa Vegas 1.2 8v
Had the nova a couple of months but got bored, so purchased this beast solely because it had a rev counter and i had modding aspirations. lowered it with an exhaust fitted wheels, then handbraked it round a bend and tore the front hub off!!

Nova 1.3 SR
owned at the same time as the corsa, because you cant have enough cars!! a bin which my mum ran round in as i slowly turned it into an original body car (it looked like a cheap xmas tree originally)

Peugeot 306 TD
A turbo car at 18 years old!! it was cheap to insure but a seized rear brake bias valve sent her through a barbed wire fence backwards when i attempted an emergency stop! sold for more than i paid!!

Corsa Sport 1.6 16v
I was now playing with the big boys, i had 104hp at my disposal and a boot full of subs (that got pinched) this had coilovers, morrette twin lights and was Black on Black wheels!! how we've grown.

Nova saloon 1.0 2dr! (owned at the same time as above corsa)
Found this gem locally advertised, £175 with tax and test. it was faded blue but was the tidiest nova id owned. never drove it and ended up chopping it up with an axe for FUN?!

Manta B GTE (same time as nova saloon and corsa B)
A mate offered me this for £200! it was matte black and looked mean. i poured far too much cash into this, painted it porsche blue and fitted an i240 kit (400 minus the arches) i wanted my dad's capri 2.0 laser at the time but he claimed i wouldnt insure it...

Fiat Cinqueento (think thats right)
Another headgasket repair, bought £200, sold £1000. full abarth kit if anyone cares....anyone...no

saab 9000cse 2.0 lpt (same time as manta)
i knew the saab bug would bite me, bought from auction for £350 as a winter hack, awesome pipe and slippers motoring, or you turn up the wick and play with wrx's on the local bypass....

Fiat coupe turbo 16v
The manta had an unfortunate bump sold for £900, welding cost that on its own before paint.....anyways i had a grand in my pocket. so pistonheads priced lowest to hightest revealed this gem. rusty and barely worked correctly but i thought it was awesome at 21 years old.

DARK TIMES AHEAD

Citroen c2 vts
GF at the time hated the saab an the manta. got sick of the noise of her face, so i bought this on finance. garbage!! had it a month or so and GF was after a new car so i traded it.....

Peugeot 206 cc
for this, horrid french bin. the mistakes of youth. we split up and she kept the car, left me with her 1.4 tigra. refused to return it until we were in a recession and she had crashed it, i sold what was left of it and settled the finance, while driving a beat up.

Tigra 1.4 16v (just one car now)
it got me to work, just about.

Skoda cube van
work wanted to scrap it, sold it to the mate i got the manta from, he made it a cool pick-up over night.

Happy times Return

Mk2 mr2 sw20
so a local garage had this up for £695. it was awesome, pop up lights, big spoiler dominating that rear view. t-top roof. this represented freedom, met my now wife whilst i owned it. will always have a place in my memories. lowered with jap split rims and a general tidy up. This car did trackdays, daily duties and anything else i threw at it....except winter.

Saab 900i
M reg saab bought for £300 just for winter to stop me dying on my daily commute. the mr2 was rev 1, no abs traction control or lsd.
the engine was donated to my mums 900i as it had spun a shell.

passat TDI
winter hack for year 2 of mr2 ownership. Boring but 60MPG and we needed it to go on holiday, bought for £750 and sold for the same. A Dull shed.

BMW e30 325i tech 1 sport
Always liked e30's, a mate had an 318is, looked great. So i traded my beloved mr2 and a grand for a really tidy looking e30.
unfortunately i treated it like a garage queen, didnt drive it too hard. the steering lock was terrible and felt like a van to maneuvre. i should have modified it and realized its potential i guess.
rare and worth a lot now!!


Peugeot 206 gti 140 (track car)
Bought to entertain myself at oulton park while the e30 was tucked up asleep in the winter months. did the usual track mods and neglected to change the puley when i did the aux belt, it failed and bent 11 valves. Broke it for a profit.


Audi s3 (8L)
after shopping for an ep3 civic for a while i wondered what else i could get for my money. turns out these were cheap, cheap for a reason. lots of EML lights and dodgy haldex, it had not been looked after.

Vectra diesel
Given it for scrap money by my sister. used it to uproot a bush in the garden which killed the clutch and off it went.

Civic type R EP3
Sold the S3 and bought what i should have the first time. bought locally, previous owner was meticulous. If youve not experienced one of these, you must!! you can scream around in v-tec all day everyday and other than a sip of oil, it wont complain. great all rounder!!



Mx5 1.8 (track car)
Bought locally cheap, it had front end damage (non recorded).
quickly built it up as a track car while using the ep3 as a daily. Cage, coilovers, brakes the works. id been told how brilliant they were to drive and how communicative, compared to the type r it was dull. the front end damage was terminal after it was put on the MOT ramp, broke it for parts and made a profit.



BMW e39 525 TDS
a cheap dog car with 200k miles, drove like it had half those.
had issues with the rear airbag set-up, losing air, being lopsided etc... sold to the father in law.

Mkiv Supra 3.0 na SZR 1995
I sold my beloved type r to buy what has always been a dream car. my love for them predated the fast and the furious, id seen one in the wild when i was about 10 and quickly soaked up any info i could. we had a supercar book on the shelves at home, which included a Supra TT and a Nissan r33 GTR. i memorised everything about these cars, the stats were better than most of the supercars!!

mine was a silver manual car with an LSD, completely original bodied car, lovely thing. i paid £3500 for it about 6 years ago now, ran it for 2 years and made 2k profit, the start of the appreciation curve maybe...


Mitsubishi Pajero 2.8td LWB 1994
We borrowed this tank from my father in law, id previously mocked it daily. drove it to scotland which cost a fortune but once we were onto the thin winding lanes, it made sense. great visibility and it felt safe and sturdy, a point that was proved on that trip.
A fool in a fully loaded kia, kids in tow pulled out of a caravan park literally 2 lengths ahead, i was doing 60 an knew she wouldnt stop. i mounted the grass verge as i swerved round the back of the korean blob which put us into a 4 wheel slide, i like drifting but not in 2 tonnes of high sided truck. anyways i eased it out of the slide rather than applying lots of oppo and luckily theyre was a lawned area outside the camp, now freshly ploughed. Bought it and kept it for 4 years!

long story short injured my hand in work and it wasnt my fault.....youve seen the adverts im sure. got paid out.

E92 M3 '08
Thought id never sell my supra but after a trip to the 'Ring id decided i want one, had a pocket full of cash, burning a hole. Did lots of research and bought from a dealership 2nd hand with warranty, had 11 owners!!
i was hooked and reeled in by the salesman and didnt see the logbook till it was too late. ho hum. loved the noise and the handling, my wife loved it too. i lived in fear that something was going to go wrong, part exed it as a loss (my first real loss) as selling with 11 owners was slightly difficult.

04 Vauxhall vx220 turbo
An elise/exige was always on my list. this was a 30k mile low owner car bought from a well known northern gargae. it was insane!! went well enough which i was concerned about after getin out of 400hp and into 200. it weighed nothing and handled like a house fly!! had it a year and sold it on for the same money id paid. you cant have a conversation at anything over 50mph but its pro's definately out weighed the cons.



CURRENT CARS

Mk3 mr2 roadster
I was itching to track the VX220, it was too clean and all my money was in that. so i bought the Wish.com alternative....
my wife had owned one previously and i thought it was briliant. i still own this, currently for sale.
i built it in a process rather than chuck everything at it at once (like my mx5) first TD was brakes, next it was rolling about, so springs were added and buckets with 4 point harnesses. its great fun to drive not the quickest on track but 84 laps of oulton park to a tank!


Vivaro day van conversion
this was the pajero replacement, 16mpg got tiring so i sold it back to the father in law. its a van with a crew cab and it will soon have rear windows and seating etc...

Supra TT auto
I loved the vx220 but i was still aching for a proper supra!
i jumped onto the boat just in time and got a gem for relative peanuts now. these things are appreciating like nothing ive seen before. the same applies to all 90's Japanese cars i believe.

Its a 96, facelift Twin turbo Auto, 47k miles which as far as the import sheet states is genuine. Gunmetal grey, with a few mods. Basic Performance Upgrades or BPU have been done, which is basically a decat which in turn raises boost to around 1.2 bar, should be good for circa 400hp. lowered on KW v3 coilovers with TRD anti roll bars, uk spec brakes, greddy intercooler and pipework, greddy titanium cat back pipe. full leather interior with subtle gauges.

outside she's a bit more shouty, knightracer carbon bonnet, veilside side skirts and rear bumper. wedsport wheels finish it off nicely.

Interesting range of cars in your history. The E30 is one I never experienced as timings were never quite right. Had a couple of MK2 MR2’s and they were certainly tail happy in the wet! Fun in 1st/2nd gear when planned, not so fun in 3rd gear when you don’t want it.

Like you, I have a love for the MkIV Supra that predates the popular film franchise. Every time I see one I go a little bit wobbly. I think it’s got to the stage now though where I have to accept that I’ll never have one, short of a lottery win.

Nice intro.

Lots of cars that I've owned/experience of an a few that are still on my to do list the E92 M3 & mk3 Mr2 in particular.

I must admit I was a fool for years dismissing the NA Supra thinking oh it must be rubbish and slow without Turbos an not trying one. Then a mate bought one with an autobox which didn't really help much. Now I'd be more than happy with one,, 6 seconds to 60 & <15sec quarter mile is sufficient for most trips.

The e30 was a strange one, loved looking at it but in its standard form it wasnt anything special to drive. im sure if i forgot the rarity of it and swapped in a purple tag e46 rack and a decent set of low profile rubber, it would have been amazing. at the time it was £2800 all my money and it was rare then (2011)

Vx's are a riot, so much value for money and on track theyre epic.

Id have my first supra back if i could have any, it was my daily for 2 years, it did everything i asked and appreciated nicely, about 10k+ for a manual n/a now.

i still class it as my first proper car, id describe handling as delicate. you had to be smooth with your imputs but also quick as a cat to catch her when she snapped!!

I happen to have a lovely mk3 mr2 for sale ;-) as a mk2 mr2 owner i used to hate the styling of the mk3, until i drove one. i'll put my neck out here, its one of the most fun cars for around £1500 o.n.o that you can buy. they handle well, and are quite tame compared to the mk2 chassis, but you can mess about at slow speeds with the lsd and grin your head off.

E92 M3's are cheap at the moment, mine was a manual car with EDC dampers, handled well for a heavy-ish car but the engine definately dominated the experience. 8000rpm through a miltek cat back sounded like a low flying war plane

I was pleasantly supriped with an n/a supra, very stout engine for an n/a. more torque than a subaru wrx! on a country a road i believe my n/a wouldnt have given much away to the TT, no surge of torque/power like the TT but once you had it wound up it was quick.

I'd certainly struggle to keep the E30 standard, would have to garage it some distance away to remove the temptation and let it go up in value smile

Never driven a VX, only Elise's of the same vintage, steering and bum feel is so good...

Damn fine daily to be fair and I bet it drew many an admiring glance smile

Well its been a while, thought id update.

The van had been used for a few 'van' jobs, namely tip runs and landscaping my sisters garden (a couple of tonnes of soil). However the reason i bought it was to use as a day van, an i just hadnt used it at all for that.

i have a 2 year old, so the long walks with the dogs and weekends away have pretty much gone.

With this in mind i listed the van for sale on a facebook forum and sold in a day.

So i had a firm £5.5k budget, the usp was as follows;
large enough to fit a child seat/ 2 in the future
2 dogs
good on fuel for long journeys (holidays etc)
comfy with mod cons.

narrowed the search to 1) Bmw e60 touring, 2) subaru forester or 3) skoda superb.

as you can tell i chose option 3.





ive had it 3 weeks now, its really comfortable, drives tight and isnt a van... its a 2013 superb CR170tdi with the 6 speed DSG.

theyre a very well spec'd car from factory, nav, cruise, heated memory leather seats, climate control, xenon's (height adj and turn with the steering).

The biggest selling point was perhaps the cavernous interior, im 6ft2 and can sit behind my seat with probably 8'' space infront of my knees. We also use an axekid rear facing seat for the monster, these are massive! In my wifes CX5 passenger seat my knees touch the dash, in this i can stretch.

i really like it so far, wheels need a refurb which i'll probably DIY (again i have a toddler) so funds are tight.

The TT Supra is one of my dream cars that I will likely now never own unless.....

Put it this way if I had to choose a spec and look even down to the wheels your car is my perfect car.

If you decide to sell in a few years time... PM me biggrin
