This is our new car, to replace our 2005 Porsche Cayenne (big) and our 2020 Ford Puma (small) - we've gone for a 2019 Jaguar E-Pace (medium)!

Why?
I work from home permanently now, and I have recently purchased a Porsche Boxster for the summer. We therefore had no need for two family cars on the driveway as the two fun-cars that I now own hardly ever get used as the vast majority of daily life needs can be achieved by walking to places.

So, time to sell the Cayenne after almost five and a half years of enjoyable Porscheness. The Puma was a bit too small to act as the complete family car (the other two remaining cars - a Boxster and a Camaro - being totally impractical for this role). The Mrs wanted an E-Pace before we bought the Puma last year, but as I had the Cayenne there was no point in having two big cars. But now, it made sense.

The Search
Our spec requirements were as follows: Must be blue (the most beautiful blue that ever there was), an automatic and have lumbar support seats, ideally with memory function. This narrowed the search down to the SE or the HSE model really as lumbar isn't a particularly popular add-on for lower spec cars but it was an essential item for me.

And blimey - it’s hard going these days finding a car. The used market is crazy at the minute, and the cars we liked the look of were selling pretty much as soon as they went on sale. We talked through our spec at the Wakefield Jaguar dealer and they were really excellent to deal with. They tried really hard to find us one, but sadly weren't able to get one before this one popped up on Auto Trader from another dealer. The dealership we eventually purchased from though (not Wakefield), I'd describe the deal as transactional at best. They just didn't give the impression they were that interested and didn't try remotely to make this an exciting experience for us, but we wanted the car more than the pazzaz of the purchase, so the deal was done and we've got this awesome beast!

This fella was strapped in, waiting in the car as a surprise for my daughter on collection day smile

The car
Its a 2019 SE model, with cream interior and electric memory seats (with Lumbar! smile ). It also has Sat Nav, parking sensors, cameras and all kinds of technological wizardry that will probably never get used. Web browser in the car anyone? It does have Android car play and Apple iCar (or whatever it is) and these are really nice and easy to use.

Pretty much ticks all the boxes. The seats are lovely! Not quite as lovely as the Gen1 Cayenne, which were just utterly superb for my large frame, but they are certainly not bad by any stretch and its easy to find a comfortable driving position. For the miles we do, it’s absolutely fine and in terms of the environment as a whole, its far nicer than the 15-year-old Cayenne.

Use Cases
All range of family duties... Shopping trips, days out, tip runs, school runs, holidays all over the UK (when we are allowed and its safe), road trips... anything and everything really.

Cream? You're brave
Yep, I know. It was the only one we could get our hands on within our budget, but I've always wanted a cream interior and the Mrs quite liked it when we she saw it. Whether or not it holds up to the rough and tumble of daily life remains to be seen, but it certainly looks luxurious! There are some nasty plastics which jaguar have used around the dashboard area, which don't look as high quality as the Evoque on which it’s based, but I'll let that slide because the design of everything else on this car, in and out, is utterly lovely to look at.

Protection
We purchased the AutoGlym Lifeshine with the car. A controversial choice amongst detailing purists, but I wanted some form of guarantee on the seats, given it'll be used for family duties. This also came with a big pack of AutoGlym goodies, which made me a very happy bunny as I love AutoGlym stuff and have plenty from their range on the shelf in the garage. smile

So there we are, see how we get on with it!

Thanks for reading! smile

I like it. The best looking jag and quite possibly the best looking medium SUV apart from prehaps the Tiguan

always think they are like a tonka toy.

Well done for not getting black leather and wheels, the blue and cream is a lovely spec!

Looks great. Well done for not going for the usual boring grey/silver/white colour choices.

What engine does it have? 2L diesel?

When I worked at a prestige main dealer as a valeter (probably one of the better known in the northern half of the country, if you want something Italian or "British") half the time the product wasn't even applied and the kit just slung in the boot. laugh Biggest con going.

Anyway, that's a lovely car! I really like the fast versions of these (SVR?) Enjoy.

Thanks for the kind comments, all!

Nickbrapp, I agreed in that they make me think of the old Tonka Toys too, they look great! smile

SpreadsheetMonkey - Yes,I agree. Both the missus and I tend to prefer our cars in brighter colours.

Engine is a 2 litre diesel. It pulls really nicely on the motorway I have to say. I'm impressed so far, although the seats aren't as nice as those in the old Cayenne. They are more configurable and definitely 'plusher', but just don't hold my arse in the frame quite as well as the old Porscha!

Dave Hedgehog - No, we paid for the AutoGlym sadly - we did get the bear free though smile

I mean you have to give it to them for trying. I bought my mother a mid spec 2018 Polo was just under £11k with just a few thousand miles. It was £9k cheaper than one she had specced a VW main dealer and was just a year old.

Interior was stinkin' the rear seats looked like someone had held a gang bang on them) Anyway the salesman told it would be fully valeted "it'll look like a new car when you next see it" so it was a fairly small family dealership so I thought they depended on their reputation and would give it a proper valet.

Turned up on the Monday to pay the final balance and collect it and they had done nothing, the valeter had just put a £35 Autoglym kit on the passenger seat. "That's £200 quid there mate", "Well your getting nothing until that's fully valeted". Then he tried it on asking if I wanted this special wax coating put on it. This was a Vauxhall main dealer so this list appeared which was £200 for a resin polish, £150 for cannuba wax. It was utterly laughable the spiel he was coming off with.

They did eventually give it a valet but it was nowhere near what you would expect, I spent a few days really giving it the once over.

Update

When we purchased the car, I noticed when we got it home that there was a line crack in one of the rear lights. It didn't particularly bother me if I'm honest as the light still worked and you could only really notice it if looking really closely. However, when the finance documentation came through it noted that, should I want to hand it back at the end of the term, that if there was any damage to the light clusters, they would have to be replaced.

Modern lights are pretty expensive, so therefore, this was now a problem. I contacted the dealer with the photos, and they asked that I bring it back for them to have a look. So I did the two-hour round trip for the manager to firstly suggest that someone had bumped the car - which I know didn't happen because we only drove it home, and then agreed to replace it. He said it would eventually let water in and fail so it needs a replacement.

The job was booked in for this week and completed whilst I waited. This was a surprisingly enjoyable experience. The whole way there I was grumbling to myself at spending so much time going back and forth to the dealer, but when I got there, I perched on one of the tables whilst the dealer did their thing. Complimentary drinks, just help yourself, so I made myself a nice cup of tea and sat down with my work laptop and got busy. And it was this that I particularly enjoyed, having spent practically two years permanently working at home, to be able to sit in an environment where people were was a very pleasant thing indeed. Some were coming and going, others also sat doing their own office-thing, so it was all very nice. A short stretch of legs to look at the new metal around the showroom from JLR (all of it lovely), and another cuppa and back to work.

A couple of hours later and all was completed. "Would you like the car washing as well?", "Yes, please". Awesome!

So, a good service overall and this car is pretty comfortable, as I noted on the way back how driving it is very relaxing. Its just a shame the dealer is so far from my house, but I can't really blame them for that.

As lovely as your experience was I'd be alarmed it took two hours to change a rear light cluster.

We’ve had the E Pace for about three months and 2,500 miles so thought I’d give a quick update…

Overall, very pleased with this car, it is comfortable and looks great - extremely happy with the cream and blue combo, it really works for me. The memory seat function is a first for us, and a very welcome one. Just being able to press the personalised button on entry and have the seat move to your specification is great – especially as both my wife and I drive this car frequently.

Comparing the ride to my old Cayenne and this car is definitely a nicer ride. It is quieter, softer and generally more relaxing. I appreciate this is comparing apples with oranges though as the two are 13 years apart in age, 140,000 miles gap in utilisation and aimed at a totally different market. But I compare simply because the Cayenne had been previously my favourite ever car purchase as an all-round daily.

Where the Cayenne wins hands-down is on space. The boot was massive and although we didn’t think we used the space that much, we are noticing the difference far more than we had expected. I recently purchased a collection-only sideboard on eBay, only to discover it wouldn’t fit in the boot of the e-Pace whereas the Cayenne would have barely noticed a giant box being thrown in the back.

The seats in the Jaguar are very lovely, but I think the Cayenne still edges it there too – and it does in terms of driver legroom too. Again, to be expected given it’s a different market segment and the e-Pace is a smaller car after all and so this isn’t a disappointment of the car, merely observations. We are both still very pleased with our purchase – not least that the price which, if we were to sell to WBAC today, we would profit £3k over our purchase price. Retail prices are now between £4-5k more than I paid for an identical spec’d car. This seems bonkers to me, yet reflective of market conditions currently.

The LifeShine product that we had applied looks to be holding up well. I give it a regular clean with my AutoGlym products and it comes up great.

Last week we went off to the seaside, and this car was a very pleasant place to spend a few hours. Wifey is pretty chilled in the passenger seat, and Daughter says the back is lovely and cosey, with a drink in the arm-rest cupholder, her Android tablet attached to the headrest, a blanket and her Jaguar bear (who lives in the car on the armrest in the back). She’s a happy bunny back there, which makes for happy parents too.

That all said, this is a JLR product and so a few niggles that have become apparent. Two rattles inside the cabin, one of which was around the seatbelt above the shoulder, but that seems to have disappeared now, and the second is intermittent but also rather annoying which is around the spot light housing on the central roof section. Also, the plastic around the centre console looks to be warping a bit and there is now a small but noticeable gap appearing where the plastic has come away. But it is JLR and with the reputation they seem to have no acquired, this is hardly a surprise.

The infotainment is also a bit of a niggle. It seems way too over complicated, with so many options and choices that seem wholly unnecessary in a car. Who the hell wants a customisable widget-based screen, which is connected to their specific key fob to provide a personalised view of different features? I just want the default radio/music and sat-nav options – none of which then get touched five seconds after driving off anyway. It’s a bit daft if you ask me and just adds more unnecessary distraction and screen-presses which then complicates the simpler things that you actually want to use. Or maybe I’m just being a luddite.

I’ve found Android auto to be very hit-and-miss and will often ‘miss’ part way through a journey. This is REALLY annoying to see it disconnect when I am actively using the sat nav on my phone. It’s so unreliable that I’ve given up on using that now, and just use the cars sat nav instead. It doesn’t route around traffic problems like Google does, but at least it bloody works and stays connected.

I can’t get Apple Car Play to work at all either. I need to do something wholly untraditional and actually ‘RTFM’ to see if it’s just me being dumb, or if it’s the car just being JLR. smile

This might all sound a bit moany, but it isn't meant to be. I'm far more happy with the car than I am grumpy about the niggles. They are very, very minor points over all - I point them out so that I've got something to talk about. smile It starts on the button, looks great, drives great and makes me feel happy and satisfied with the world when I'm driving it. So overall, its good! smile

I like these and really looks nice in that colour combo. The plastic deforming is a bit poor, but then some of the plastics Jaguar have used of the the last 20 years or so haven’t been great, my old man had an type and the glove box handle came of in my hand, there are better quality plastics in a kinder egg.

PS that bear… it’s a cat. wink

It’s been a while since I updated this, but I haven’t had much to report really. The Jaguar has been our family car and the daily driver and so far, all has been well on the whole, but a few niggles did need sorting out.

Technology

What I do still find a little confusing though is the whole Jaguar infotainment system. Its not very logical to me. Firstly, as I've said before Android car play is really hit and miss and will often drop out when driving. Its so unreliable that its basically unusable – so I don’t use it. But this could well be my phone dropping out, I don't know (Apple car play is fine on my wifes phone now I've worked out how to use it!). Instead of Android Auto, I use the cars sat nav, which is OK. You can get traffic updates if you either allow wifi tethering from your phone (which I have to remember to do every time), or you can plug in a data sim. So I’ve now gone with the latter and the car has permanent connectivity which is nice. You can also use this as a wifi hotspot in the car if you want, but I don’t need this function. There are mixed messages on whether it will reroute for traffic – just depends where you read.

You can also download several apps and get information about your car. There is the Jaguar Remote app – which gives you journey info, shows you where the car is located and lets you pre-heat the cabin if you want to. There is also another Jaguar Remote app, which is the same but different. It looks a bit nicer and has the extra feature of telling you the status of the DPF filter – something which I can’t find anywhere in the cars own menus. There is also a couple of other apps too for your phone to interface with your car. One of those is a navigation app which uses the same login as the car – so you can set a destination on your phone, and have it appear on the car. Except that, even though both my wife and my phone are using the same account, we have different destinations in the history. My history was the same as the cars, but now the car is kind of merging the two together. All very strange.

So the apps are a bit fiddly, and there are too many of them, and the system in the car is also a bit fiddly – but then I think all touchscreens are quite crap and a daft idea for cars. I much prefer simple, button tech that I can use without have to look at it. But thats all personal preference. My wife is quite fine with it and likes all the modern technology on it. I guess I'm just becoming a luddite as I get older! laugh

Warranty Repairs
Anyhow, onto the niggles… Firstly, the boot struts are meant to have a plastic trim covering them, but ours looks to be broken as it just slides down when the boot is open. Also, the interior trim between the passenger seat and the transmission tunnel looked to have warped and started to come away, picture in the previous update.

Boot Strut problem

I booked it in for these to be looked at as part of the warranty and resigned myself to another two hours round trip (a lesson learned there about buying a used car with warranty from a distance away!)

The day before my booking I noticed that the bonnet wasn’t sitting right. I tried opening/closing but it looked too high on one side. I thought it might have been shunted in a supermarket or something and so asked Jaguar if they could have a look and see if it was the bonnet or the bumper that was now out of line.

The car went in earlier this week, and the good news is that the bonnet is sorted. There is an adjustment on it, which I didn’t know about, it was altered and it now sits flush again. The trim has been re-seated and is now sealed again, so that’s great too. Unfortunately, the struts need replacement and he said one isn’t working properly any more and the other is likely to fail as well, so when they arrive I’ll take it back in again. All completed under warranty.

Whilst I was there, I asked for an AdBlue fill up as well as this was showing as due in about a thousand miles – also free of charge as I have a service plan with the car.

So, whilst the drive back and forth is pretty inconvenient, it isn’t all bad. The repairs were done whilst I waited over the course of the morning and I just perched at one of the tables in the dealership and went about my work on my laptop for the day. Free tea and drinks, and a sandwich shop just across the road for lunch.

And its a very comfortable and relaxing car to drive, so thats no hardship either. Overall I can’t (or shouldn't) complain really. Its serving us well and we very much like this car.

I've driven all the paces, E,F and I as we have a few as company cars. All were great, the E pace in particular I found a great car to cover distance but i only ever had them for a few days.

When my other half's countryman gets to 6 years old I think we'll get one as her next car. Your thread has encouraged me that longer term ownership is good.

Car Park Shenanigans

As this car is our daily family car, it is used for all manner of outings and duties - including supermarkets. A couple of weeks ago, despite me parking at the very bottom of the car park, where there were only a handful of cars, some bell end has either reversed into our car, or let their trolley go for a wild ride of its own.

No note, no apology, just two dents, a whole bunch of surface scratches and a deep scratch to boot. Idiots.

So, I got the car home and gave the damaged area a good clean and polish and thankfully this managed to clear pretty much all of the scratches. This left the two dents and the deep scratch:

I called Dent Devils, who I used once before on my Camaro to great success and they came out and did a great job. He said on the phone that the big dent may well leave a mark as its so pronounced, but he did a great job and there is now only the tiniest of pin pricks that can be spotted - and only if you know where to look. It looks pretty much perfect.

The only thing left is the deep scratch, and for this I'm just going to buy some touch-up paint to make it less obvious.

Cream Interior

Up until recently, I'd never understood why people talk of not wearing jeans with light coloured leather, but now I know. The Mrs had recently purchased a new pair of dark blue jeans and the dye had come off onto the seat. It was really obvious too. I had the AutoGlym LifeShine product applied to my car which is meant to protect from these things, so was time to see if it was true.

Out came the trusty AutoGlym leather cleaners, a damp sponge and some cloths and I got to work. The first few spray-and-wipe actually removed the majority of the stains, but there were some on the side bolsters that required more work. Time for a good scrub and lashings of AutoGlym leather cleaner.

But 5 minutes later, true to the promise it had all come off and the seats are now completely stain-free. I also noticed on the back seat that daughter must have dropped a felt tip pen as there was a pink line across part of the back seat! Once again, the cleaner got it all off without a problem.

I didn't get any pictures of this process unfortunately, but needless to say I'm happy with the results and glad I paid for the protection as I bought it predominantly for the interior for precisely this type of scenario, so money well spent.

Such a shame about knobs in car parks but it’s so random and speradic in the way it happens it might never happen again so it shouldn’t put people off buying nice cars.

Glad the cream came up ok, it really makes the car look so much smarter than if it was a black interior

I was next to a E pace in the petrol station in a lovely grey colour with the cream and silver wheels, it looked very smart, think I much prefer it to the Q3 or other Germans and even the v40
