Instead of clogging up Irfan's thread with my E63S I thought I'd start my own.

In my 6/7 years of driving I have had a few cars:

Ford Fiesta
Peugeot 106
Octavia VRS Mk1
Octavia VRS Mk2
Audi S4
Audi S5
Audi RS 5
Audi S3
VW Scirocco (mistake)
Audi RS 3
Merc C63
Boxster S
Merc E63S

I ended up trading in the C63 for the E63S. The C63 was the best car I ever owned at Stage 2 and perhaps I still regret selling it. The E63S is better in every way but somehow can't quite the satisfaction out of it that the C63 gave me.

Some pics first. I have had the grill wrapped in black for the horizontal slat and chrome for the vertical slats to make it stand out a little.

After promising myself I wouldn't tune this one after 6 months it went to MSL for a stage 1 which have me 737bhp and 836lbft which made it another league. Craving the noise of the C63 (which had downpipes) I took it back to MSL last week. Here is my post from another thread:

Arrived at MSL yesterday at 8.30am and ended up leaving at 8.30pm. Need to go back next week as well. What a day.

So, got the stock downpipes cut out and the guys started fitting the downpipes I supplied. With the passengers side in they cracked on with the drivers side only to find the pipes clash with the steering rack and they couldn't be fitted!!

After some stressing on my side fortunately Acid had some other pipes available which we were able to fit but there was a small clash with the steering rack again which I noticed after I went for a drive. Came back and the pipes needed to come back out and a small adjustment made to get them to fit. About 5pm all was mechanically sound and we started mapping.

My stage 1 was 737bhp and 836lb/ft. The stage 2 map gave 715bhp and around 800lb/ft. Clearly something not right here! After several new maps, dyno runs we managed to get 750bhp and about the same torque. At 8.30pm we were able to finally head home. Acid and the team put in a real huge effort to get my car running more power and get it to where they expected.

On my way back to Bristol I was able to give it some beans and unfortunately the pops and bangs were so pronounced it felt undriveable just due to the noise. Jesus wept it is loud now and savagely fast now. I just can't cope with the pops.

20 minutes from Bristol, taking a fast sweeping bend I noticed the grinding noise came back indicating there is still a clash between exhaust and steering rack.

As I had barely eaten all day and was sleep deprived I woke up very pee'd off this morning and sent a mail to MSL.

Fair play to Acid, he called me back and we had a good chat about it. From his side he said he can easily fix the map to reduce the pops and can make another adjustment to sort the pipes. For me, it is just too loud, the raspy sound I loved on my C63 but not so sure on the E63S. Think maybe I prefer the more V8 grumble noise than the decat rasp. The decat smell is also too much thus I have asked the guys to put the primary cats back in, gut the secondary cats and put me back to stage 1.

Today I have been back to MSL and Acid kindly lent me his car to come back home whilst they gut the second cats and put it back to stage 1. Requires the gearbox out and some welding of the old pipes so they need around 2-3 days to get it done considering the other work they have on.

I am hoping once this is done I will be happy with it and can keep it a while and enjoy it.

Having saw Imran from Evolve tuning today at MSL with his new M3 comp I am really liking the stance and wide races it has. E63S looks too tame for my liking when compared to the M3 and the RS 6 for example. It's faster in a straight line than both and sounds better but I really like the look of the two mentioned above.

If I am not happy with the E63S I may move it on and wait for the M3 touring to come out and down in price a bit and pick one up.

Really not sure what do right now but will report back after I get the E63S back later this week.

I have just done the same work on my W212 and am happy with the sound from mine, I think yours sounds good but maybe the pops and bangs could do with turning down a little, did they get to the bottom of the downpipes rubbing on your steering rack? Do love a white wagon and the 213 looks awesome

Love the look of the car but agreed those pop’s are excessive, it’s what I’d expect of a 4 cylinder golF R/s3 jobby to try make it exciting, a v8 which is exciting just because it’s a v8 doesn’t need the fakery IMO.

Must be an absolute monster in a straight line this.
Was your c63 the old 6.3 or the new turbo out of interest? Interesting comments re the feeling of them both is all.

Nice plate on that!

The rubbing was the pipes directly clashing with the pipes.

I have found a company that does wide arch conversions on the 6.2l C63 so I am wondering if they'll do that on my E63. That would be awesome.

Nice car bud!

In a straight line yes it is really bloody quick.

My old C63 was the 4.0TT. Absolutely loved it.

That's how I felt, like a bit of a boy racer with the excessive pops and bangs.

Cheers mate, I’m really happy with it now! When do you get yours back from MSL again? Do they pop and bang quite a bit as standard on yours?

What a fantastic car; I think every one who owns a touring/estate of any kind will aspire to own an E63S one day; the pinnacle IMO coolthumbup

However, for me, the exhaust and tune have ruined it; they sound superb from factory and with so much power; is more really needed?

Can understand doing something with the exhaust to let out a bit more thunder wink But the bangs & pops are OTT (in my opinion, others will love them I know)... But it just sounds like it should be a Fiesta or Golf; trying too hard...

As standard it had a few bangs and pops but a nice level, just a few on the overrun.

Hope I can get mine back tomorrow or Friday. I'm currently in Acid's car so I guess he'll want that back soon enough.

let's be honest an E63S isn't necessary at all but we get used to the power so always want a bit more.

With the second cats coming out I am hoping to release a bit more of that V8 without the raspy tone you get with a decat.

Hoping to fall in love with the car again later this week.

Does the TCU protect the transmission from excessive torque by communication with the ECU so as to limit in gear boost?
I imagine 836 lb/ft is well above the transmission's torque limit.

I can see why you are not happy with the pops and bangs, I kind of felt the same way after decatting my car and regretted the extra noise. Hope it gets sorted to your satisfaction.

MSL took my standard CL500 from 480bhp to 708bhp- with AMG turbos and decat, tune.

Did you get Acid's S Class with the very expensive no plate?

it does sound a bit more 'parpy' compared to mine with the downpipes and stage 2 map. Each car responds differently particularly to the map, we may be running different maps though as i had a fuel pressure drop out on whatever the first map was they put on.

The pops sound very unflattering on a phone camera anyway. Not that im a massive fan of them, but they sound far better than a 4cylinder cracklng away for sure. Mine does it naturally and more in Race mode but i can live with that, i quite like it as it isnt OTT in my eyes. Defo not for the shy though. In comfort mode with the valves open or closed it shouldnt be popping and crackling then though?

Secondary cats out with primarys left in place sounds like a happy medium to me. I imagine it'll need remapping again - would be curious to know what figures the stage (1 or 2?) map throws up now the primary cats are going back in but its still more free flowing with the secondary cats out.

Haha thumbup Very true biggrin

As you said; hopefully the low notes of the V8 rumble will come out; that'd balance it nicely I think

Wow, that’s a really loud E63!
I have just collected a w205 C63 estate in white and feel it’s loud enough for normal use.
I did the whole IPE decat on my W204 C63 and it started to grind on me with the drone etc
