Modified Peugeot 106 Rallye
Discussion
Just thought I'd do a thread on my new car. For those that might not be too clued up on these cars, these are homologated N1 cars. They were basically a 1.4 XSI, but with a revvier 100 bhp 1.3 engine and certain luxuries removed. They are rare cars, only 1000 were sold in the UK and there are around 100 currently road registered, more are SORN obviously. I would argue that these cars were a bit of a sales disaster when new, they were apparently very hard to sell and were sold with huge discounts in order to shift them.
This popped up for sale on Pistonheads classifieds a few days ago. I am always looking for cars and if something appears that I like the look of then I'll go and have a viewing. I hadn't even considered one of these cars previously, so I spent the day reading up on them...what to look out for etc so I was armed with knowledge when I viewed. In all honesty, after spending a day reading up on all the faults, from rot to troublesome engines, I had got it in my head that the car may well be a basket case, given it is 25+ years old.
Thankfully, it wasn't. Very solid underside and chassis and no rust on the inner arches. Thankfully someone had removed the arch liners so I was able to inspect the area behind. The only thing that concerned me was a slight bit of white gunk in the oil filler cap, but I didn't really care as if it was the head gasket it is a cheap enough fix and I factored this in to the price I offered/paid.
Here it is at its old home...

So...this is NOT a standard car. If you are looking to read about a purists example, then I am afraid you will be disappointed.
The bodywork is standard, thankfully, and it is a non sunroof model (this is apparently quite rare, as you actually had to tick a box when ordering, to specify no sunroof) however, the interior has been stripped and someone in the past has gone to town on the engine and mechanicals...like really gone to town...
The Engine is a 1600cc LAD motorsport unit. Ported and polished head, Cat Cams, Jenvey throttle bodies etc. It is supposed to be around the 180 BHP mark and it feels it when accelerating. Car probably weighs in at around the 800kg mark, so you are looking at around 225 bhp per ton.
Other mods include manifold, centre exit exhaust, coilover suspension, big brake kit up front etc, basically anything that can be upgraded, has been upgraded.
So far I've driven the car once. It is madder than a box of frogs.
It's loud, it whines and pops and bangs, it's uncomfortable and rattle, it's tricky to start, it smells of real car smells, but... wow.
The unassisted steering is very direct and the feedback is superb and the car feels very planted. It's also seriously fast, the feeling further amplifier by the lack of sound deadening or carpets and the tiny size of the thing.
Today was cleaning day. This is not a detailing thread, but I spent a fair bit of time washing it down and clay baring it and it has come up really nice.

Next step tomorrow is a ceramic wax.
Then it is being dropped off at a race service specialist on Monday. I originally booked it in for a head gasket replacement (convinced it needed one), however, I am not sure that is actually needs one now as the white gunk on the oil filler cap doesn't appear to be coming back and the engine does not overheat, so the cause of this may well have been condensation after being left unused. We will see after a sniffer test and what will be, will be.
I will also see if he will have a look over the car and let me know if anything else needs sorting/ replacing.
Plans for the future..
1. Drive it.
2. Either raise the coil overs on the front, or get some good quality dampers lowering springs as it is a touch too low for road driving.
3. Keep it in fine fettle.
All in all a really pleasant purchase and for such a small little car it gets a lot of "respekt", stopped outside the Spar and a fair few people seemed to get excited/ commented on it. Don't think this would ever happen with more modern machinery.
Thanks for reading.
Matt.

Awesome. I’m somewhat jealous. I briefly owned a white S2 one of these many moons back and yours sure looks like a minter. Thanks for reading.
Matt.
If I saw your 106 parked in one side of the street and the latest Ferrari or Porsche parked on the other, I’d be making a beeline straight to your Peugeot for a closer look.
Lovely car. I had a mk1 1.3 many years back (20yrs+) and remember it vividly. I also had an Elise at the same time. I much preferred the Rallye.
I would love to find an original and unmolested 1.3 for sale. I spend half my year living out in Madeira and there are quite a few out here (no rust!) with prices still well below UK figures. I will jump as soon as I can find one.

105.4, I am exactly the same. I think my interest in cars has a cut off point of about 2005, after that very few things excite me lol.
Snotrag, I have no reason to doubt it, others may call BS and fair enough as it is not dyno proven, but it definitely feels fast, happily spins throughout 2nd gear with your foot planted and feels faster than my 260bhp Impreza.

they never had a problem selling the Rallye, in S1 or S2 format, I had both when new
The car did not come with a sunroof, fairly certain you'd have to have gone after market to get one.
when the car hasn't been used for a while you do get gunk on the cap, it clears off after a run
if it's an 8v there is no way it has 180 hp, unfortunately LAD weren't the best at building engines, although great at BS marketing, I'd say with bodies you're looking at 150 max, and nearer 140.
it'll weight around 820 kgs without the driver
pop over to the Rallye owners group on Facebook for more info,
(I have a race 106 Rallye and know a fair bit about them, both s1 and s2
Thanks for the comments guys.
Dynion Araf Uchaf, a few things...it is not an 8v, it has had a LAD TU5J4 16v engine transplant, with the work on top. I also deliberately said this in the original post "It is supposed to be around the 180 BHP" as I didn't want people thinking I am a BS merchant. It is supposed to be this figure, it may well be less, but I don't know until it is put on a dyno.
There are also lots of S1's out there with sunroofs if you google it.
From what I have read dealers did struggle to shift the S1. Some discounting the price down to £7495 from £8995 for brand new cars to clear stock, so hardly a sales success!
Thanks for the advice and clarification though.

Those mods on a healthy 16v will see decent power whatever the actual figure.

Lovely, lovely car
Nice car Matt..
I also own a heavily modified Rallye although it is an S2 with just under 160bhp (8v) and have for the last ten years, The longest I have ever owned a car by some margin.....
Those mods done well will yield 180 but it is about more than the sum of parts with these cars.
You have a sandy brown loom and a DTA so it may be a LAD engine with a westcountry map?
The good thing is that there is such a knowledge base for all aspects of these cars now researching about the right setup for you is relatively easy,
My car is (now) is a fast road car and I have ditched the coil overs and run B8 Billie's and 165lb shortened springs and it is spot on for me and the bumpy Devon roads!
You should check the age of the tyres - I don't think they have been available for a while in a 14"(I may be wrong) These cars like a quality tyre!
The quickshifter looks different, do you know what type it is? Looks nice, I often wish my satchshift was a bit more bling!

A hundred years ago I worked at a place in Leeds that had a Peugeot garage opposite. When these came out I went for a test drive and was pretty much immediately kiboshed by the small footwell... I was essentially pressing accelerator and brake (it might’ve been clutch and brake, it was a long time ago!) at the same time, all the time. On paper, everything was great, just not in the steel for me. I’m so glad people are still driving them and sticking more power in

When I was a kid we were on a coach in Greece heading to the hotel and one of these flew past (mk1 in the same colour scheme) I remember the noise even today.
I've wanted one ever since, had kind of forgotten about them until paddy for a red one in top gear last year.
Enjoy, it's a lovely car

What a super car. I occasionally drove my mates slightly barried xsi (the 1.6 engined version) and thought rather nice to drive. Weirdly I have size 11 plates but never had any issues with the pedal box. That said I think I had an Austin Mini at the time so it’s all relative.
I agree with whoever said this is more appealing than a Ferrari, I love proper rally cars.
