Triumph Acclaim Avon Turbo!

Here is my ongoing project. I was lucky to find most of the components requred from a long since scrapped genuine Avon Turbo, and have set about converting my Triumph Acclaim HLS.

I only got three of the original "Kiwi Linea" alloys, but have newly tracked down a complete set (in Hungary, but never mind!).

Still also to fit new boot badges and a decal, but that will more or less complete all the bodywork and cosmetic changes, then I need to think about bolting on the turbo charger etc

I owned a few Triumph Acclaims years ago when I was a younger, they were a great left field car, my mates were buying Novas and Metros etc and I went with this, they were cheap to buy and if you took the air filter assembly off the twin carbs had trumpets and they sounded brilliant!

My history teacher back in the early 1980's had an Acclaim Turbo. It was featured in a magazine at the time, but for the life of me, I can't remember which one. He loved that car, despite appearing an unlikely character for that kind of hobby.

Excellent.

My grandad had an Acclaim. They were owned exclusively by grandads when new. His had a cushion on the rear shelf.

My grandad reckoned he could get 120mph out of it. My Dad didn't believe him, but it did shift quite well for a 1.3 at the time.

Honda Ballade. And they were bloody good cars, smooth yet rorty engine, punched well for a 1.3. Replaced by the Honda Ballade mk2 but rebranded from Triumph Acclaim to Rover 213.

Mother had one back in the day. It was the only car I've ever known where the panels rusted from the centre outwards, not from the seams upwards! Doors, wings, bootlid - all did the same thing.

Not sure at the moment, but i believe I have everything from an original Avon Turbo I need. Whether everthing will work is another matter though! The turbo unit itself will probably have to be re-built, and theoriginal carbs re-done at the very least.

It is indeed. The plate was the main thing that attracted me to this particular Acclaim in the first place!

These were unexpectedly quick back in the day when compared to their peers.
Bit retro even back then but they did shift.
