  • Midlife crisis/sensible warning**
So I’ve purchased the below, a Ford Focus estate in frozen white with Titanium X specification. An ex-fleet car at 82,000 miles. I paid £7100 whilst I sort out my life over the next couple of years. So I see this a trouble free motoring. I feel like as I write this though that I should be handing in my testicles and my man card and getting my coat.

After a handful of days ownership and 100+miles covered my opinion is this car doesn’t go. I mean it goes, but it doesn’t GO. 120bhp 199lbft from its £0 VED 1.5 TDCI engine It’s got every gadget I’d want. I feel I need to buy myself sensible pants now to match this car. I’ll be frequenting the sensible areas of this forum now and wearing Blue Harbour.

Following taken from Autocar
0-62mph 12.2sec; Top speed 111mph; Economy 74.3mpg; CO2 98g/km; Kerb weight 1564kg; Engine 4 cyls, 1499cc, turbodiesel; Power 118bhp at 3600rpm; Torque 199lb ft at 1750rpm; Gearbox 6-speed manual

I get it man.

Cars are like shoes. You can't wear your flash trainers all the time. This is a Dad shoe - you know those multi purpose style shoes you'd find in Decathlon et al. The purposeful looks of a hiking shoe but the comfort of a trainer.

I've a thoroughly boring Insignia currently and whilst nowhere near as bad as some people think (actually quite good IMO) it's not very inspiring. It used to be the family hack but now that the Mrs is driving a big yoke I can change to something more interesting.

Do keep the thread updated I promise to be mildly interested.

A remap would be interesting!

I shall report back. I have a trip to the Isle of Man planned this Xmas so the run to Heysham should show up whether it does as claimed.

Currently floating around the 50/55mpg. Just been to Peterborough and back so pretty steady at 60mp along the A47.

True test of economy will be on the drive to the Isle of Man at Christmas

2 year update

Current mileage: 97250
Miles driven since purchase : 14000

Battery replaced, Starter motor replaced (warrenty). Needs axle set of front tyres now to be able to pass MOT end of the month. Air con needs regassing

Self parking feature is a black magic. Parallel parking is so easy now outside the house. Will even get into spaces I will disregard as far to tight to attempt. Does not always get it right mind and will occasionly hit the kerb with the wheels. Car also perpendicular parks like in a car park but that requires a double press of the button but its not something i've used like once or twice.

1.5 TDCI engine is nice enough. Nothing much to write about it. Gets to 70 easy enough but anything more is a struggle. So i've become accustomed to setting the cruise control and letting the car do the work.

I've now got a 2015 Focus in black with the same engine but mines the Titanium not the Tit X. Glad yours is running well.

Update post as closing in on 4 years of ownership

Mileage: 111000 ish

Last WBAC price offered: £4,250

Windscreen replaced this weekend after getting a stone chip on the passenger side 1inch from the edge of the screen. Hit a bump in the road not 2 minutes later which sent a 12inch crack across the windscreen. £60 on the insurance.

Also had a offside front wheel bearing replaced this year, £200 inc VAT at local garage.
Front discs and pads replaced at MOT in December, £300 odd

Got no good reason to sell her at the moment. Self parking fucntion still amazes me and passengers when i get a chance to use it. Can see myself still driving this car in 5 years. £0 road tax currently and returns 600 miles to a tank of fuel. Drive pretty much everywhere on the cruise control.

What a dependable car.

Not to derail the thread, but I know of a number of people, who over the past decade, have leased various Focus'. Sometimes replacing with an identical model (same colour/ shape) but on a newer plate. God knows how much this costs them and I always think why not buy one at a couple of years old and keep it, they would save an absolute fortune, as this thread has shown.

Did this once with a Peugeot 206 1.6. Traded it in for a GTi. Same colour just 2 years newer. Took my friends 2 weeks to notice.

I park the car on the road so higher risk of the car being damaged. And with cars being stolen as frequent and as easily today, i feel it just is not worth having a nice car. Function over form
