After a lot of thinking and test drives, I decided upon an 8 series BMW. I’ve picked it up this week and after c200 miles I’m absolutely delighted with it. Quick, fantastically well put together, great tech and (still) quite rare.

I do, though, recognise that it is an unusual (and reasonably unliked!) car sitting alongside our ‘17 plate Q7 (also unliked!)

Thank you both! I’ll take some more pictures tomorrow - but it’s carbon black (so black / blue) with the extended black leather inside. I’m yet to see another one on the road!

You've clearly never owned an X3.

These will make a compelling used buy in a couple of years, as I suspect the values will drop like a Rock off a cliff.

That said, I really like them. They are very nicely styled and certainly look extremely plush inside. The sort of car you could drive for many many hours and not be especially tired at the end.

I would go for a an 840i or 850i though, as I have never been a diesel fan. Appreciate running costs would be eye watering, but I don’t do loads of miles these days, so not a big issue.

One of the few mainstream cars I would buy (if I had the money!), probably be the M850i for me.

Lovely, enjoy!

Awesome car. The 40d engine is really nice. One of our neighbours has a new M850i convertible. My 6 year old says it’s “rude”. I tend to agree, looks the fking dogs bks.

Great car! Very worthy successor to the 6 series, a real upgrade over the previous generations for sure. Saw one in the flesh whilst the X5 was getting berated in its MOT, the orange colour is very good, the black is stealthy and the interior is very nice, extended leather as standard really makes this car much better, something they should have done in the first place considering what the 6 series was intended to be. Exhaust note is interesting in that there actually is a decent exhaust note, considering it is a diesel. Strong engine too. More pics!

Love these! I've seen a few on the road in Germany and they look stunning.

Why the oil burner? I figure anyone who can afford the depreciation on a big brand new GT can stump for a petrol engine; or is the motor that good on these that you don't lust after the petrol?

I really like these - enjoy OP.

I’ve seen a few about, including an 850 on the M5 on Monday. They look a lot smaller out and about than they do in the showroom. The interior is lovely and a big step up from previous BMW interiors.

I only saw my first one of these (also black) a couple of nights ago and didn't at first twig what it was!

I borrowed one a couple of months back and was really impressed with it and would definitely go for the diesel. I would however wait until they have depreciated properly as they are already down to 60,000 with just a few miles on.

I really like that. Still haven't seen on in the flesh, my local dealer had nothing of interest in stock.

Oh yes, very nice choice indeed.

Saw one on the road recently in the same orange/red that James May had on The Grand Tour and I really like the look of it; definitely on the "I would own one of them" list if I had the money!
