Another Road Trip Car - Seat Content
Discussion
Hi All,
Every year me and a few mates complete a road trip,
First year i purchased a Renault Megane Coupe to complete a 2200 mile trip around the UK. I paid £96 for the car and this was documented here - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
Last year we done an European trip which included a trip to the Nurburg ring, for this i chose a VW golf which i paid £150 with a smashed sump, documented here - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
My Buddy who also comes runs an MX5 his car was documented here (he takes more pics than me) https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
Anyway 2019 means there is a new trip looming,
I intended on doing many upgrades to the Golf as this year we are still going back to Nurburg however this year we are also going down to the swiss alps. Plus this year the group has expanded from 3 cars to 5 cars which will be interesting.
This moves me onto my newest purchase, i found the car for sale for a cheap price and made an offer and it was accepted... WIN...
The issue with the car?? well the previous owner thought the oil warning light mean that the car had low oil so kept putting oil in. However the warning was for oil pressure.. so the engine was almost full of oil and seized.
Thankfully my love of VW's means that i have a small collection of parts available which also includes more than one spare 1.8t engine,
I started by firstly freshening up the old engine. Give it a bath and a new timing belt along with water pump.
I also have full new gaskets ready to go on.
At this point i started to tear down the car ready for surgery.
So far i have the following parts to fit
Poly Bushes
Yellow Stuff Pads
Solid Mass Flywheel
3" Decat with Rear O2 Delete
S2000 Air filter
BK7RE Spark Plugs
Catch Can
Ive also started deleting the SAI, N249, N112
One of my biggest choices are K03s or K04 turbo to run, ive got both turbos here and both manifolds etc, the only thing i dont have for the K04 is the different Decat set up.
Im sure there are things ive missed but progress has stated to pick up..

Bit more progress..
Thursday night I got the rest of the engine apart ready for removal this morning

Managed to get a nice early drop and this morning me and Mikedrop removed the old engine..
Also removed all the air con bits because race car..
Also spent some time cleaning the engine bay and expansion tank and washer bottle

Going to see a turbo tomorrow 🤔 😎

Bit more progress on the weekend..
Started to prep the lower arms.. Gave them a quick clean and painted around where the bushings will live.. Will paint the rest once the bushings have been pressed in...
Got brand new ball joints, drop links, and polyurethane bushes ready to go in.
Also took apart the rad assembly and cleaned and painted the frame as it had bits of corrosion on it.
Lastly got the covers back on the engine now it's been torqued to spec...

Having only just noticed that i never finished this thread off..
SOoooo where to pick up..
I got the car back together just before its trip in September. Got the engine back in and all was going well.
Was having smoking issues, as the turbo was an unknown and pulled off another car.
Once i changed the turbo and took it out for a spin i got about 5 miles from home and there was smoke everywhere.. it seems as i didnt put the oil return gasket back on correct (its hard to see and almost fitting it blind).
After i got it towed it back home and gasket replaced all ran well.
I was still having some boost fluctuation issues and tired everything to fix these before the trip, in the end i took it as it was.
It covered 2300 miles without any issues just a bit of boost fluctuation..
Its now back in its garage ready for the upgrades for 2020 road trip :-)
Pics will follow in a sec as my laptop doesnt allow me to add them

Wow.. December 2019 is the last time I updated this..
After the Swiss Alps Road trip the good old Seat sat in the garage over winter awaiting her new parts and the 2020 road trip...
First up was her new coilovers
Once fitted

This made getting in the drive way interesting once I had brought her home

Next up was some bucket seats from my previous trip golf, I found some seat mounts cheap which I picked up.. however I wasn't fully happy with how they fitted so I cut and welded them to make them stronger and just a better fit.

Once putting the coilovers on I discovered that she now rubs especially after adding in 20mm spacers on the back
So out come the roller

Next up was a clear of the driveway and a little help from my helper

Next up was a change in the back box.. I had a straight pipe on her which was fun but just too loud.

I also managed to get my hands on a new front mount so set about fitting this.. didn't want to cut the front bumper so went for a twin pass which is fine for the power I'm pushing

Whilst I was inside I also removed a little more weight

This meant she was ready for her 2000 mile trip.. however.. covid had other ideas so we swapped the Swiss Alps round 2 for the NC500.
Some pics from the trip..
Car was faultless the whole time..

Since September she has now been sat in the garage where she will remain until spring 2021 where she'll get more upgrades for 2021's trip.
