Having always enjoyed the quirky and cheap and after my AWD Toyota Raum was burnt out, I decided to go for one of these as a Winter hack should things get bad.

The review pretty much sums it up and I love it as a result!

She's a clean old girl though with low miles and isn't as 'common' as the 2WD version.

You may notice the separate gear stick which allows 2WD, 4WD high and 4WD low range.









The spare wheel in the boot is how they come from the factory! I thought someone had just got lazy and thrown it in there.

Oh and the roof is a T-bar, so a bit like Burt's Trans Am! Eastbound and wobbly..

Bravo, not sure I’d have the cahoonas to be seen out in that, oh and love the boot spoiler are these basically a Jimny underneath?

This one seems slightly less practical than the last one but who doesn't need a 2 seat open top 4x4 for the winter?

Have to admit I thought they were all 2WD. Certainly a leftfield choice

I remember the first time I saw one of these, and I remember laughing . It is just a very odd looking car, in a good way. Serious off roader though, and you can give them the lift kit and chunky tyre treatment.

I do wonder why this was made new mind, surely very limited people wanting size and features of a small 4x4 but no boot / rear seats ?

It was a coupe version of the Vitara. Probably paved the path for the heinous crimes of the X6.

Back in the 90s despite Vitara's coming with low ratio boxes, locking diffs etc; they often sported 10inch wide wheels and bolt on arches (cos Vitara not racecar). Doing a coupe version probably seemed a great idea at the time. The execution however was a tax awkward.

Insurance companies didn't cater for it much online, that's for sure!

Did quite a lot to the old girl in terms of servicing and tarting it up before it went up in flames.

Yeah, the “Fat Boy” Vitara, usually pearl white or pearl pink, I bet none survive now, a very 90s phenomena, can’t imagine anything worse but strangely nostalgic thinking about it.
