Have never participated in a readers ride section, primarily becasue I've typically run £500 beaters until they become field cars and then replaced with similar.
However, beginning of the year a friend at work was buying a new Mk7.5 Gti and as part of the VW scrapage we agreed I'd get £1500 for my £250 mk4 tdi. Rather than buy 3 beaters I used that to buy the most modern car I've owned to date - a Mk5 GTI. Timing was perfect as the Mk4 had no heating, constantly overheat (water pump impeller likely) often open its windows overnight and a long list of other "refinements"
A few months (days in reality) of looking, and this came up just near Grimsby and a Sunday afternoon visit and the deal was done.

117k, novelty sunroof, vital heated seats, lots of biege and regular DSG fluid changes. Did need a machine polish and a new set of tyres as no corner matched but this was part of the budget. Was also standard so a known base from which to progress a little
Since then the following has been done
Lower arm bushings began to knock on the way home so replaced both and had the tracking checked
Cam follower, bpv along with an oil and filter change
Developed a bit of a misfire so did a set of spark plugs
Set of coil packs a few weeks later as two started to fail and the other two weren't OEM
Not long after this, I hit a small puddle with a large hole underneath it which punctured two tyres and scuffed both wheels

ATS pointed out the rears had been run flats which was a bit of a shock and didn't flag in the history. Ordered 4xPS4s from blackcircles.
Also noticed my headlights now pointed at the floor which I traced to a broken headlight level sensor on the same side as the front puncture - another £160

I have put a claim in with the local council, website says 26 weeks for a response. Shame I can't work to the same leadtime for my council tax really.
Next steps are source a 2nd hand Miltek and Revo filter ahead of a remap at R-Tech as it feels like it being reigned in all the time and will likely make it as fast as said friend's Mk7.5

What’s the gearbox like? Was thinking of one of these as a daily, only test drove a manual version..
Overall, great. I use the paddles/buttons more than I thought but they're instant and it moves back to auto very quickly. Mine very rarely drops into first which can be a bugger for quick by junction pullaways but is a rarity not the norm.
