Hi guys, I have a 55 plate Honda Civic type R 55plate special edition with the red carpets etc... beautiful car. I’ve had it for years now and it’s only done 27000 miles, probably the lowest in the country, however, it’s been stood idle for the last 2 years, not even started.

I’m wanting to give her some TLC and get her back going again but I don’t want to just connect the battery back up and fire up.

What precautionary measures would you suggest to keep her ok? Timing belt change etc?

Regards

Jumbo

No timing belt to worry about as they have a chain.

Change the battery, oil and filter, out fresh fuel in and off it will go!

Would you change the chain? Is that even a thing? Considering I’m a sales exec I know very little about actual caring of a car.

Would I expect to have lost any power?

Do you think it will be worth something some day?

Are you car sales? (I am!)

You shouldn’t ever have to worry about the chain, they’re designed to last for life.

Shouldn’t have lost any power.

What colour is it? I’ll assume grey? Keep it mint and it’ll be worth a decent amount.

Yeah mate, vw. How about yourself?

It is grey 😂 best colour in my book.

Does it need any extra stuff I can spend money on just to make her all good, I don’t mind getting chain done for piece of mind.

It’s a premier car you’ve got - The last batch of type R’s before the new civic came out were all treated to it (does that make it a special edition or just a late run model...?!) - tinted windows, red carpets, Momo steering wheel and Recaro seat, same price as the stock car. I had one a few years back, it was a brilliant car, sold it to fund a house purchase.

The only true special edition was the 30 anniversary edition which was the pre-face lift. Only 300 made - 100 in each colour. Also there jdm type R is more special as it has 212bhp and limited slip diff.

Low mileage cars like this will no doubt hold their value - there is appeal for those wanting high revving N/A engines, also for previous owners who may miss their old EP3. Whether or not it will appreciate... well it’s always difficult to predict. The EP3 sold very very well

Give it a service and check valve clearances. It’s a chain as noted above so no worries there until it gets to very high miles.

Renault.

Honestly mate you don’t need to do much else, you could get the valve clearances checked but apart from that just a nice service..

Here’s my own EP3 - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I'd expect the calipers to be seized too if stood for that long! Honda weak point.

Just had mine done, they were absolutely goosed.

and yes. It will appreciate! The 30 anniversary edition is my favourite as it's a preface, but a premier is like a facelifted special edition (seats, carpets, embossed calipers and tints). That will be worth a few quid as it is.

N/a are dying out, everything is crappy turbo now. Keep it!

Cheers for the advice everyone. Yeah I assume the breaks will need a change, 4 new tyres, service and a few other bits, I like the idea of getting the windscreen jets to mist instead of squirt as they are pretty close to useless. It's totally stock as well which I'm quite proud of being able to resist temptation to mod.

Would the fact it's not had a full service history effect it's future value or is it still the case cars over a certain age don't really have full honda history?

So a list of things to do

New break pads
caliper overhaul
tyres
service
oil change and fuel change
Battery

And no to the chain?
Reckon its worth towing down to get these done before starting her back up?

Check fluids, charge battery, fire it up.

If it has been sat 2 years without moving I would turn the crank pulley a few times with a socket before starting it up, that will at least spread a bit of oil on the shell bearings, it will also let you see if any belts have seized on their pulleys (alternator / aircon), no power steering belt as it's electric.
Sounds like a nice EP, but not the lowest mileage, I know a guy who bought a facelift version brand new from Chathams Honda in 2004 and it's a proper garage queen, not yet turned 15k miles!.

Budget for at least a rebuild of all the calipers, they like to get stuck on these (Or I'm just unlucky!)

Haha I’ll get some pictures up when I’m not out in the piss in Leeds for my parents Christmas present haha.

How much would a caliper rebuild be?

I’m afraid it’s not for sale

Depends if you do the rebuild yourself or not. There is a kit on eBay for £60 to do 2 calipers. New ones would be about £90 each for genuine Honda items, pattern parts a bit less.
