Excuse the mass of pics...

I bought this truck from a neighbor about 3 years ago. Then, it was a very 'honest' bog stock 302 cu in 4x4 XLT Lariat Flare Side. Downside was that all of the paint had burned off, due to it's lifetime spent out in the blazing FL sun, dried up suspension bushings and a disintegrating dash pad and instrument binnacle - again, victims of brutal weather over a period of more than 20 years.

It also had this gnarly 'character dent' in the passenger door....

I ran it like this for 3 years. One constant has always been the number of people hitting me up, trying to buy the thing from me. Notes left under the wiper in parking lots, people knocking on my front door and even randoms in gas stations asking how much to sell it.
That made me think maybe it was worth spending a few bob on it and making it nice to keep forever.
I fixed the interior - new dash and reupholstered bench - but the paint was a real eyesore.
So, off to the bodyshop it went...

I got it back at the weekend and am super-pleased with it's refresh. I really like the original Bimini Blue metallic and wanted to keep it as unmolested as possible. So - no stupid lift-kit or giant airplane wheels.

I did want to give it just a hint of bling, because the original chrome was so nice, so I added this brush guard.

I'm very pleased with it's revamp. It's very much a keeper, as far as I'm concerned. Still a few subtle things to add, but overall, I think it's a result.

What's the idea behind flareside/stepside pickups? Don't they mean less space in the pickup bed for the same size vehicle? Is it a style thing because of the way pickups used to look in the 40's?

Genuinely curious.

Probably not - certainly nothing dramatic. The motor is a low compression Windsor 302 EFi. It probably makes less than 200hp (which is pretty ridiculous for a 5.0 liter V8), but it makes a lot of torque, so coupled with selectable 4x4 it is quite capable off road.

All I've done is service it, disconnect and plug up some of the more crude anti-smog devices and remove the restrictive air cleaner 'snorkel'. It has a reliable, but fiddly twin throttle-body injection system, which I'm reluctant to mess with. I suppose I could put some headers on it, but spending $5-600 to gain less than 20hp on a truck that I drive gently., due to it's advancing years, seems a bit pointless.

Lovely OP, although I'd have been half-tempted to leave the paint for "patina". That GMC as well, lovely.

It seems to be 50/50 between vanity (they're mostly a nod to early 50s pickups) and easier access - the stepside means it's easier to climb into the bed for tying down loads etc.

Fair play, it's a lovely thing.

And you can still get a stack of 8'x4' plywood sheets in the back - which is the standard minimum for a US truck. I like the flare side bed style - not as common as the conventional long-bed F150.

Lovely truck. The pics on eBay make it look fixable.

Was the buyback price from the insurance company a bit too steep to consider?

Lovely looking truck OP, especially now! thumbup

I went to stay with relatives in Canada in 1977 who had a farm, so they could run the pick-up on tax-free fuel!

When you are 18 a 5.7 litre manual pick-up truck is like a dream come true! (I didn't really want to come home). laugh

Lovely truck, Matt!

...as for the orange one, no surprise the pics don't show the damaged side!
