New daily - VW Vento 1.8cl ('scene' content)

Although I've dabbled over the last few years in JDM classics, a quick look at my garage will show I'm a VW man at heart, even more so if that VW is a) old and/or b) slow.

After following the 'retro cars for sale' Facebook group for a few months a car came up that caught my eye. It was local, unusual, pretty rare and looked in really good nick. After a quick chat with the owner I stuck my previous daily (The Scab) up for sale on various FB groups and got it shifted. Then it was off to Driffield in the pouring rain to collect this little beauty.





Key stats are
N reg VW Vento 1.8cl auto (!)
72k
4 previous owners, one before last had it over 10 years.
Lowered on KW coilovers
BBS RA wheels (with correctly sized (matching!) tyres)
Hearing aid beige cloth interior
Keep fit windows but electric sunroof
No rust, anywhere

Love it. It hate going over 75 but it's perfect for my commute in traffic.

Suspension is ok, not harsh but a little bouncy. I may replace them with coils/springs from the mk3 golf if speed bumps start to get tedious.

I love me an old, obscure VW - but that thing must be slower than a glacier!
Also, I think the wheels are RA (standard on later mk2 Golf GTi), rather than RS (rare and desirable).

Agreed. If those are one-piece wheels, they are the RA model. The RS wheels were split-rims, from memory.

You're quite clearly correct, i'm going to blame it on a combination of fat fingers and auto correct.

Is fixing the front seats on the to do list? The look very broken.

Plan was to keep it as is, but as always with the things my friends are incredibly bad influences.

First are some wheels, 7x17" Team Dynamics Monza (I wanted TSW Imola but can only see ones with odd fitments for sale). I'm hoping they'll fit without any bother but may need to do some arch rolling.



Next on the list is to fit a head unit. Again a mate pops up with one of these



Nothing special but BNIB with a VW adapter for less than half price of a new one. Gets me DAB/Aux/USB for the drive to work. Keeping an eye on budget boomers for some decent door speakers too.

Few other bits I'd like, a VR6 front lip and some GTI skirts would be nice. Another friend also has a GL boot spoiler he's trying to sell me.

Enjoying it so far, the gearbox / engine is perfect for shunting along the m1 in traffic at 20mph.

I like these; the shape has aged well and they're very easy cars to work on. A friend at university had one and it seemed to be from the peak of VW's "lego" era - i.e. every part quickly fits onto every other part.

Spares cost nothing at all and tuning options are nearly limitless.

I like the RAs on it too.

Not bought it yet, but it's round at a mates waiting for me to collect it. Not too fussed to be honest. No idea what condition the speakers are in and want to run this as cheaply as possible.

This morning's task was to get the god awful scene stickers off.

Also found out the bloody glove box has been stuck shut cause the catch is broke

Off to eBay to find a replacement.
