Volvo V70 2.5TDI - Shed Status.

So if you look into my deepest, darkest history on here you'll see I have a Toyota GT86. And whilst its a great car, I wasn't enjoying my new commute in it. Besides the fact it isn't that great for long mileage, I also started associating the car with a boring daily drive rather than something fun to enjoy at the weekends.
So, enter this. £650 of Volvo. It's done 175k, is a 2.5 TDI with an Auto box, and just about everything works. The only issues I've discovered since picking it up last week are "meh" in my eyes: Faulty thermstat, so it runs cold. Noisy wheel bearing, and the fact it seems to have too much oil in it. I also seem to be doing only about 30-35mpg, although that may just be a rubbish trip computer as my calculations seem to give it a 45mpg average. But oh well! Serves its purpose, and its nice not having to refill the tank 3 times a week! (GT86 is fairly frugal, but has a shot glass for a fuel tank)

So far I've managed to cobble together some old car audio stuff I had lying around in the garage, so now I have a radio with aux input. And thats about it really. Before anyone asks, the previous owner put the coilovers on it. I think it looks alright, but is rather bouncy.
So I'll probably use this thread to document its life. So if any of you out there want to get involved in some Shed-esque activities, you can use this thread as reference for "Reasons not to be so foolish".

It is indeed an old VAG lump from many many years ago. I think the last VW/Audi it was in was either the old A6 or the T5 Van.
The thermostat will be changed one evening this week (in the dark, as per the norm for my car repairs). Hopefully it'll make the MPG a little better. I also have an EGR blank ready to go!

That's a cool old bus (but I'm biased) and a great price for a diesel one.
Here's mine. £700 but 2.5 petrol. I average 30-33mpg on my commute but that's driving like an old duffer.
ETA - The stereo in them is great and I just use a cassette with a wire coming out to the headphone socket on my iPhone.

I've managed to contract both strands of AIDS currently flying around my office. So what better way to get better than changing the thermostat on the Volvo in sub zero temperatures? To the point the car was frosting around us.
Anyway, thanks to the guy who put the thermostat in the worst place possible. At least its done, getting up to temperature and holding it steady!

Brilliant old things.
Had one a few years back and racked up 30,000 trouble free miles using about 7 gallons of fuel in the process. Eventually it stripped the injection pump belt and was never the same again, eventually the pump head (or something) gave in and by which stage I was a bit fed up. However, as a general tool it was unbeatable.
It'll be a bit hard on the top mounts if it's on coil overs but aside for that, change the fuel filter regularly and they're great.

I have found a new feature out, quick release indicator lamp.
The whole sodding thing came disjointed the other day. So, being that I work in such a high end engineering industry, I duct taped it back on. But on route to work, the tape FAILED ME! It once again started flailing about, but before I could pull over to sort it, I lost the lamp to the A43. Luckily it went off into the undergrowth, so no harm done to any other motorists. But it did take the wiring and everything with it! BALLS. Ebay to the rescue! Still will require a little bit of bodging for sure...
Anyway, £13 down now...

Hahahaha your update has reminded me that I had the NS indictor fly off my V70 Tdi on the motorway!
These things are bloody fantastic. I had a manual and it was lovely to chug around in. My dad has an Auto on 230k miles, and still going strong - although it's starting to feel its age like an old dog - very quickly!!

Yes, they make a good noise for a diesel. Sort of like an old Audi Quattro fuelled on gravel.
