New Banger! Merc C180 Auto

Should be taking delivery tomorrow.

No MOT, but has no rust in the usual places and leaks in the foot wells so shouldn't take much to get it through. No advisories on last MOT. Its advertised as a 1.8 but looking online its a 2.0. It's Automatic with 155k on the clock. Suspension seems fine and seems to drive just fine pulls away very nicely.

Its the Avantgarde version Estate. In Black.

Looking forward to getting it MOT'd.

All for a measly £100.

No known faults at the moment, Failed MOT last year for exhaust needing replacing.

That has been rectified.

SO all should be good.

Don't worry. I've had 6 W202's. Weak point is the gearbox. Change the oil and filter in the gearbox. Costs me about £90 here in North Wales. I've still got 2 of them. A mint C180 Sport and a super mint C240 Elegance. Both on SORN. Of course I'm assuming it's a W202.

I know a taxi driver in Malta well that runs an old "C" class he has had from new.

Totally immaculate inside and out.

Coming up to 400,000 miles.

(He had a new engine around 220,000 miles though).

I'll see what sort of condition gearbox etc are in when I pick her up later, she seemed to drive fine. I presume its a 5 speed auto box ? I'll be doing the usual service, cam belt change etc.

I believe it is a W202. I'll post some photos when I have it in the car park.

According to AutoData it's timing chain, will get that done if it is showing signs of wear.

As Malta is 17 miles by about 10 miles and has the worst possible roads he must be a busy taxi

To be fair the rust issue seems hit and miss. All of my 202's have come off Anglesey were it is generally milder than most of the UK. They do not slather the roads with salt during the Winter. I can only put 2 and 2 together and say that gritting appears to speed up the rusting process. My first was white, this one suffered the worst. My blue metallic and gold metallic versions have no arch blistering whatsoever, sills are excellent on both.

Google returns 120k results for "W202 rust", with 1,700 alone coming from the UK MB owners' club. I'd say that your experience was reasonably atypical, and that it was more 'hit' than 'miss'.

I have had 6 of them and only had a problem with the white one. However, I did 67000 miles in the white one over 18 months. Back box and tyres, a few rear lamp bulbs (common fault) and gearbox service. Cost me £350 to buy it. Scrapped at 173000 for £220. Gearbox failure.

Overall Mercs rust more than most other marques. There's 2009 cars out there with rusty doors.

They really are not very good and I own one so should know.

Have you ever looked at a modern Mazda!?! Merc seemed to struggle with the transition from oil to water-based paints at the turn of the century, the early E-classes really suffering in particular. They seem to have got on top of it now (unlike the aforementioned Japanese manufacturer).
