I finally got my hands on an SL60 AMG

The car is a 1995 pre facelift model which makes it the original design by Mercedes of the R129 shape and the first of the official collaboration with AMG

The SL60 was launched along side the E36 models and were the first official AMG cars that could be ordered directly through a Merc dealer

I believe there are 4 azurite blue pre face lifted sl60 in rhd
48 uk cars in total
Not to be confused by people selling 1990 or 1993 500sl with 6 l AMG engines
These were not sl60's and apparently are not running the same horse power as the 1995 official 6litre. Although this has not been substantiated in English press but the Germans believe so!
Any 500sl 6l cars appear to have come from Japan

I own a 500sl of same vintage so can directly compare.
0-60 or 0-100 wow this is significantly faster

It will burn rubber easily even though it comes with 10.5 inch rims and 285 tyres

Get in any 20 year old normal car and and you will be underwhelmed in comparison to a modern car. But the sl actually is so well built and put together and nothing else in the day was so well designed. Not the 850 BMW or even a 95 model 993 porsche

My best description of the car is that it feels like a Corvette
It sounds like a corvette especially as I've had the sports exhaust opened up more.
Handling is still pretty rolling but Mercedes was Always going to be more of a GT car than track monster.

6l v8 yes it eats fuel and I would say significantly worse than The 500.
Every gear pulls hard. This is the 4 speed which is more clunky than the 5 speed.
It's still lazy gear changes on the way up but thank fully it will down shift under a quick pull of the lever which is brilliant for 50mph overtakes which it blasts past traffic.

Facts the car is 385bhp but probably running 410bhp or was 20 yrs ago!
0-60 circa 5secs
Torque is strong it just pulls
You know when you are going up a hill on an A Road or motorway and you need to squeeze past someone that's when you feel it. The 500 the pedal has to go to the floor to initiate kick down or pull down to 3rd to get past. This sl60 just goes straight away.

On the same back road I reckon this is 15mph faster as it builds speed so much more easily.

Life is short and who knows how long we will be allowed to drive 6l v8s so I'm getting the most of it now.

Mine is certainly not been a garage queen and not will it be in My ownership. Like any 20 year old car I am assuming repair costs of 3k min this year and there is a small list of bits that would be renewed but that's the fun of it.

I can't stand Mercs at all, they're just not for me, but there are a few exceptions to that rule and these are one of them, they're like the 8 series for me, a timeless classic that looks good everywhere, seriously nice motor.

The term OH MY GOD comes to mind with that. I would so love a V12 SL, and this is the daddy of them all. What extra bits does it have over an SL600?

It's not a v12, its a v8! Built on the 5litre v8, an engine used at lemans... The sl600 is a different kettle of pistons. AMG did build on the 6 litre v12, in 7 litre and 7.3 flavours.

Yes 5l v8 was bored out to 6litres
Lazy per litre output in comparison to modern 100bhp + per litre

Spec was updated engine, AMG uprated brakes
Alloys 17 inch and seriously wide and that was about it.
Otherwise it's the same as a 95 spec SL.
Climate control, orthopaedic seats, heated seats , cruise control, dual airbags, traction control
Electric hood etc

It's a lovely car, Op. I remember the test in performance car and PCOTY, I guess 20 years ago now :-)

Must have some burble with a better breathing exhaust system. What a great engine. And a time before AMG went all baubly and marketingy- well before that, but after the excesses of the 1000SEC days!

I drove one of these when it was new. Bit scary as it was below freezing at the time. Belonged to a client.

Thanks guys. It really is getting to be an old car now but still modern enough to have brakes that work and in theory every day usability.
