Good evening all

So after several different cars I found myself looking for another Peugeot 306 for use as a daily, there were very few left and those that were for sale were either not what I wanted or massively abused or just totally shagged (technical term).

I was either looking for a Clio 172, BMW e46 330i or a 306 (GTi6 or a nice D’turbo) and after several (!) failed attempts at buying one of the above last weekend I desperately opened Chrome and began the ritual once more and a certain 306 popped up.

After failing to call the gentleman selling it that very evening (minutes after the listing) I left a voice mail and left it at that. The next day came and I caved in and gave him a call again, success!

The car sounded fairly good the only snag was I had to wait a week to see it, that week went very quick indeed.
And yesterday morning after being stunned at what I found I then eventually managed to persuade the owner that I need it.

Just outside the office and it started tanking it down with hail, just after the warm sunny morning.

I shall get some more pictures in due course, the condition of it is quite exception given its age and it comes with a stack of history (an insane amount!).

The seller has asked me to look after it and more importantly, use it!

Have always wanted one of these.
Supposed to be a blinder for the back roads.
Enjoy

They are brilliant cars, reasonable amount of room inside and cracking visibility.

Best bit is the induction noise even with the OEM setup smile

It's fairly reliable and reasonably good on fuel, over 30MPG even when given the occasional bit of abuse!

Next job is the link bars as its got a bit of suspension noise and a new side repeater lense.

These still look so fresh in OE/OEM guise.

These are quite old cars now and many would have been driven with enthusiasm.
How is the car holding up at this stage of its life and since you have owned it?
Hard to find a good one now I think.

I had a white GTI-6 for just over 8 years, which served as a daily, few track days and a few Nurburgring Trips. I absolutely loved mine, it was ultra reliable and a riot to throw around. The cars been with my best man for 4 years now and still is ultra reliable, think its topped 100k.

Awesome cars, look boring but very little that's as much fun down a country road. Enjoy, just watch out for the passive rear wheel steering!

Good to see a fellow Moonstone owner. I like the fact they're not like the modern over styled, big-winged hot hatches of today, as I think that a good hot hatch shouldn't be overly shouty. The fact these things look like a diesel driven by an OAP works well (unless you're like me and decide to stick a massive Piper exhaust on the back!)

Mine is having a suspension overhaul very soon as there are some components that are getting very tired. The parts are not cheap, but they're worth it IMO.

I think if you're buying something noteworthy for its handling a suspension refresh is as reasonable as changing a tired cambelt! The chassis engineers didn't spec bushes and dampers pre-aged to 100,000 miles after all wink

Apologies for the delay!

So far so good really IMO, although my opinion is skewed somewhat after owning a few Alfas!

So far I have had / done the following:

Cambelt
Water Pump
Aux Belt
Full Service including: Spark plugs, oil, filters (inc fuel) etc
Side repeater (buy a whole new one tbh much easier).
One tyre (puncture), another one due soon and will have alignment checked anyway as we have a decent tyre shop next door that can balance these alloys wink
Front link bars.
Exhaust reattached as the back box has come away from the centre section.
Interim service, this time with Total Quartz 7000 oil (OEM) and OEM oil and air filters and MOT (no advsories).
Handbrake Cables (broke just after the MOT!).
MAP Sensor (Got an OEM New one dirt cheap)
Lambda (NGK, previous was not right at all).
Crank pulley.

I would say that this is fairly reasonable given its age and mileage.

Have done just over 7000 miles since buying, next up is another wash (been a bit lazy with keeping it really clean - I blame my SO!) and a new gear knob.

I am a regular at the tyre place next door and have often admired this car whilst getting things sorted.
Don't see many around let alone tidy and standard, Although I am pug biased.

Also seen it out and about - sometimes making good progress, ideal for the narrow roads a round here.

Getting rare as I'm casually looking for one to use when I'm to precious to take the rallye out, And their nowhere near as common as they used to be.

It does get some admiration smile But I need to wash the poor thing!

You local?

It usually does make progress but there is a lot of traffic these days.

Yes I'm local, I drive quite a few vehicles but most easily recognised in the OEM++++ S2 106 rallye (blue)

I think we've eyeballed at each others cars on the road in the past.

Long term update.

Well the GTi6 is still going strong, just about!

It's only really let me down once, getting lunch from Trago Mills (thank you kind gentleman in the T5) where the starter finally didn't want to play ball!

This meant an evening removing the inlet manifold to replace it, I wasn't beaten.

It's taken me and my SO to France, racking up over 600 miles with aplomb and just the other week made it 170K.

It still does 35MPG or more on a run, the AC no longer works due to the pipes corroding (planning on removing these at somepoint), its had another cambelt / water pump kit and seems to want to keep going. However how long I keep these I do not know, with a house purchase looming and the commute growing I feel sorry for making it do these miles.

Was in the market for one of these and couldn't find a decent one so ended up with a Ph1 172 which is brilliant but missing a 6th gear!

I'd love to own a blaze yellow one of these as I drove one on some back roads when I was younger and it was the most fun car I've ever driven.

Look after it and enjoy! What tyres you running? I've currently got T1-Rs which are terrible and looking for some AD08Rs next.

I'd be very happy with 30+ mpg, highly impressive.

Missing 6th gear you say? Try wanting a 7th gear..

Its a bit buzzy at 70 MPH, below this is very capable as a cruiser with a refined ride and above this its also ok (where appropriate).

She runs on Continental Premium Contact 5's at the OE fitments of 195/55/15.

It gets over 30MPG mostly because its doing dual carriage ways, have done a calculated 39MPG on the French exploration wink

Long term update for 2023.

It stills going and the last two years it has had some work done which is commensurate with its age and mileage:

  • Cambelt / Water Pump / Belts.
  • Clutch started slipping at 190k~ so got replaced with new cable etc.
  • Beam replaced along with new calipers and brake cables etc.
  • New cat, centre section and back box.
Its now on 205247 miles yet still returns 35-40 MPG on a run and I'm still not sure what I'd replace it with.

On a recent road trip to North Wales.

Planning on another continental visit this summer with potential to scoring a ride on a C47 !

Lovely. I love the design of the 306; it’s a very pretty car.

I learned to drive in a d turbo.
