So.... I was missing having a 1.8T Audi A6 to make my life a misery (for those of you who remember my previous one)

Picked up this one for £0.00 on the condition that I return the plate to the previous owner. Fair enough.

It's done some miles......

Unfortunately it has some pretty big running problems - no boost at all. Changed a lambda sensor because it was faulty and this improved the idle however I think the catalytic converter is broken - I can see lots of white powder down there if I stick an inspection camera down the sensor hole.

Plan to remove the cat and smash out it's internals to see if it will run properly again and then replace it if it does

Wow that is a lot of miles. I had a golf with 140k on it with 14 oil changes and it seemed tappety enough... Read the last thread, hopefully this one goes better.

Excellent. How can you lose at that price?
(We'll have to wait and see).

Considering the two Audi's I had with that engine grenaded themselves before 110K miles, that is very impressive.

Makes me all nostalgic for my old A6 1.8T when I see the failing center instrument display screen!

Once that engine starts to either leak coolant or oil, it will only start to get more and more expensive to keep running.

1.8Ts are well known for issues with N75 valves and recirc valves, so check those out. you'd be good to replace with a forge 007p.

Even at 18 years old, that's some going for an average motorist?

Good luck!!

Was this on the big mileage thread? Sure I've seen one of these with 323k miles on this week!

Thats quite some mileage. I assume not the original engine as they don't usually last that long

One of the things on the to do list is check the engine number against the paperwork, doubt any change was recorded so it's probably still got its original on the logbook regardless

Started taking it apart yesterday to address the suspect catalytic converter. What an utter pain in the arse job, makes me relive all of the pain I went through with the last one!

Powerflow stainless exhaust doesn't help - it's one part from the cat back unlike the original which is modular. No access at all to the rear cat bolts despite making it mostly loose (the back box support is very rusty so I'm not touching it)

Looks like I need to remove a couple of heat shields from the drivers inner CV joint which are equally fking impossible to get to

Arse.

Also - this sump plug needs changing pronto!!

This is still immobile - can't for the life of me separate the cat from the downpipe. Access is shockingly bad.

Thinking about just cutting the downpipe and sleeving it once it's back together
