Mercedes w210 E250 non turbo D barge....
Discussion
Yet another shed to add to the masses of pistonheaders that seem to be embracing the cheap barge.....
Wanted something comfy and reliable, this popped up.
Good points, it's pre Chrysler (1996), I don't know if this helps quality but theres no rust to speak of. It's got less than 100k. It pulls a lot better than I thought it would.
Bad points, it's massively basic for one of these, no a/c, no sunroof, no arm rest. Not exactly quick. The guy who was complaining of his rented astra 1.4 being dangerously slow a couple of weeks back would absolutely dust me.
Pic's to follow, here's one of the interior for now. I'll probably get bored in a few months but in my head I'm picturing tenerife taxis with 750k on them and dreaming.......

The sort of car you could keep forever alongside more interesting metal as constant, unfaltering and yet pleasant transport
Looking at the stats suggests an 11 second 0-62 which is much quicker than I was expecting,
How do you find the manual with having a foot operated parking brake too?

I read that too but I'm pretty sure it's wrong. Other sites suggest around 16-17 seconds. Once up to speed it cruises very nicely and very quietly.Looking at the stats suggests an 11 second 0-62 which is much quicker than I was expecting,

Tbh I didn't even know they did the w210 in a non turbo, apparently it didn't last long and not many sold in the uk. Lots in Europe however. I believe it's the same om605 engine as the 190d 2.5 and the w124 250d.
I use a W210 estate with a manual box. The combination of that with the foot operated parking brake is a PITA. I can't complain too much when I balance this against the princely sum of £350 to buy and has since passed 2 MoTs without spending too much apart from on tyres and brakes which wear out on any car.

Early UK w210 diesels were normally aspirated. The 605 is a great engine, really characterful and strong and very economical. Not quick to accelerate but happy at 90 all day every day. I'll be reading this thread with interest. What mpg are you getting? I too thought of Astra boy!

No arm rest? That is definitely a new one on me in terms of povvo spec on a merc!
No, I had that sort of spec on a 1997 W210 Turbodiesel Classic (the one with lots of tuuuuuuurbo laaaaaaaaaaaag!) so it's not that uncommon.Mine had alloys and aircon, ABS, 100litre fuel tank, electric (but not heated) mirrors, auto gearbox (4-speed, I think), identical seats to the OP's car, cruise but no armrest and manual windows. How much of the spec was optional versus standard I have no idea. I think mine was one of the very first TDs.
Oh, and rust. Lots of rust. That came as standard. The front suspension collapsed because the uprights were just corroded through. A real pity, because when it was running well, it was a lovely cruiser.
A w210 with no rust is a very rare thing. The photo is one of mine today. Before I started to remove panels, it looked like a very nice car. It is in fact, rotten as a pear.
I've removed the wings, because they are brand new, as spares for the one parked behind. That one is the same age but one of the rare, rust free ones. I'll keep the wings just in case.

I'm looking at the brochure now. What a sensible car: all anyone ever needs. Sensible tyres, sensible performance, sensible economy, sensible equipment. And very tasteful.
Here's the blurb:

Edit: note that the power and torque are developed at high engine speeds (for a diesel). I find in my 606 I have to rev the nuts off it to make it go. I'm sure it's the same with this car but more so: for strong acceleration, you need to get it between 3,500 and 5,000rpm.
