2001 Volvo C70 2.0 5cyl LPT - LOLvo Cowshed
Discussion
Evening all,
It turns out that in my world a Quarterly loyalty bonus at work + Whisky one weekend + ebay = 2001 Volvo C70 with no MOT. I don't need a shed as I have a company car and the Mrs has a reasonably adequate Vauxhall Signum for child ferrying duties.
Now, I’ve actually had the Cowshed since 29-Aug, since then it has sat at a local garage waiting to get looked at for an MOT. Had I actually needed it on the road I’d probably have chased a bit harder to get it done but all things being equal it was out of sight, out of mind.
Last night, my tame mechanic (Brother in law) said he’d had the LOL-vo up on the ramps for a poke around. The verdict (what it needs) :
Front brake discs
Front brake pads
Rear brake discs
Rear brake pads
Slight play in steering (ball joints or track rod ends)
One of the tyres is losing pressure over time
Number plates – previous owner had a private plate on it and couldn’t find the originals.
On a car parts website for Euro models it appears that brake parts are pretty damn cheap. Eicher Front brake discs, Front brake pads, Rear brake discs and Rear brake pads come to £54 in total, hell I might “splash out” on the Brembo branded stuff for about £100
Other than that it needs a damn good clean
Inside – Cream leather is disgusting. It’s general dirt from work clothes and, given the amount of dog hair, I suspect there’s been a maingy mutt careering all over the seats.
Outside – It was always parked under a tree by the previous owner so there’s tree sap and general ming on the paint.
Underside – Previous owner lived 1.5miles up a dirt track which passed two farms. It’s caked in mud and general grime.
Underside isn’t too much of an issue for me to be honest, a few drives up and down grassy back lanes once the weather is better should help.
So, some spec
2001 Y REG
VOLVO C70
2.0, 5 cylinder
Low Pressure Turbo
BBS alloys as standard
Some scuffs and light surface rust on the paintwork
Very comfy leather interior showing some age related wear but no rips or tears
127,000 miles
Flat battery due to sitting but starts very easily with a jump and will run all day with no issues.
Won the auction for - £311.
Seller only took £300 as it was on fumes
I then found £3.85 in change in the ashtray as I took it off the recovery truck.
Cost - £296.15
The plan?
Get some test on it, let the Mrs use it for kid carrying duties and probably sell her 2.2 Petrol Signum. That might all change if getting the baby seat in and out is affecting Mrs Melv’s back.
Enough waffle, here’s the terrible pics from the advert.

I did a cursory google search on ETM issues and it appears that people are sorting it using contactless throttle position sensors. Although my very brief search didn't bring up a how to guide.
Mine was done by Volvo as part of a recall.White sticker on the etm = org (highly unlikely given the age now).
Yellow sticker = its been done by volvo with the software update for the ecu.
Seems I got my calculations wrong for the discs and pads at ECP.
Man maths at its finest in regards to tyres. Bought a set of 16" steels with shot tyres for £20 because a colleague here in the office was selling 4x 215/55/16 Continental premium contacts as he traded a vehicle in with winters fitted. 6mm on two, 5mm on the others all in tyre bags and marked with OSR OSF NSR NSF, very handy!
I have a battery in the garage from a Vauxhall I broke for spares last year that should be fine and that just leaves my tame mechanic to order whatever ball joint related parts it needs from Dingbro.
Won the auction for - £311.
Seller only took £300 as it was on fumes
I then found £3.85 in change in the ashtray as I took it off the recovery truck.
Discs and pads all round - £78
16" steels - £20
4x 215/55/16 Continental premium contacts - £20
Battery - in stock
Ball joint parts - TBC
Cost - £414.15
Once the BBS wheels are off and in my garage I'll assess their condition with a view to punting them on Gumtree / e-bay to make some ££ back. Either that or just add them to the stack of wheels I've accumulated over the years......
Next instalment - MOT (hopefully) and attacking the interior with a hoover and cleaning products.
