The replacement for the D2 S8, a D3 A8L 4.2 tdi sport.

Whilst doing the clean i also applied this:

Awesome stuff, no wipers after 45mph haha.

Short term plans include a wheel refurb, and rectifying a few foibles. Possibly a reverse camera retrofit as well.

The car has an unknown map. Assuming its a conservative one it should be around 360-370bhp and 600+ ft lb. It certainly feels VERY pokey low down and pulls rather hard. I did a fair bit of online reading before the purchase about how well a mapped 4.2 tdi goes, and how intoxicating the torque surge / shove is. I glossed over that but in hindsight with a dpf / cat delete and a custom map i can see it being a bit of an animal! Of course the 4.2 is a buttery smooth diesel engine, and its turn of speed is very discreet.

That's an Audi I'd happily own. 600ft lb is going to give you a good shove whatever it's in?! That quite a beast, discreet, but beastly!

Economy depends how you drive it.

On the journey back from edinburgh (dont ask!!)
I was getting 40-45 mpg sat at 68mph. That went down to 30-31 when cruising at 80,90, or 100 dependant on what the traffic allowed.

It can get late teens if your booting it, but low 20's is average for me currently, mostly round town.

I was very tempted by one of these - ended up getting an XJ Super V8 as I didn't think I'd get any better economy out of one of these. Would very much like to try one someday though.

I think they're a lovely looking car but i would of had to get the V10 S8, fuel wouldn't be tragically worse.

I debated it, but they are so much more to buy, i would have been looking at a pre facelift.

Also ive been told (reluctantly) by a few S8 owners that a mapped 4.2 tdi does leave them in the dust. I dont think there is much between economy round town? Maybe 4/5 mpg. But a good 10 / 15 more on a run

Torque stock is at 1800rpm. Feels like it kicks in about then, although im looking at the road if im honest.

It really doesnt matter what gear your in, just slam the throttle and it will take off haha.

No its a 2008, the reg is the previous owners private plate. Funny you should mention that i just popped the original back on today as it had swapped over.

I know! Waiting to give it a clean beforehand!

Its a LWB so rear leg room is massive. They come with a huge spec as standard. This car doesnt have many optional extras. No bang and oulfsen, no soft close doors, no radar cruise control. But then again it wasnt 15k + so im not really bothered. I really wanted a colour i liked on my next car, and A8's tend to be black. Which isnt a bad thing but Daytona grey pearl is an amazing colour! And being a sport model is a bonus.

Done a video so you can see the pull the car has at lower revs in the higher gears. Just watch the revs vs speedo!

I broke the launch down into frames when making the video. Looks to be around 5 secs to 60, give or a take a little.

Very nice looking car you have there. The economy figures seem a bit disappointing though, only negligibly better than my 4.2 FSI petrol (in a slightly lighter A6 I grant). I guess the preference comes down to where you like your power, low down or high up the rev range, I can definitely see the appeal of all that torque.

It drinks round town, always will with two turbos constantly spooling. Its on a cruise that you will notice the mpg gap. I got 400 miles to 3/4 of a tank back from edinburgh.
