whers my thermostat

my temp needle in my car (fiesta 1.4 ghia 97 r)keeps going from a normal reeding to just dropping right down ive been told i need a new thermostat my local dealer wants silly money to do it so thought i would do it myself im sure its in the big black box which houses my filter,,,am i correct ??? also am i doing any damage driving round with a dicky thermostat...thanks all

Normally on one end of the cylinder head, the air filter is some way away. Can you find a Haynes comic for the car? That would tell you with pictures and everthing.
