Why is it assumed that getting into the marketplace first with a BEC is the be all and end all?

I can think of several designs of car that got into the market first but were superseded by those who followed later - having got it right! You can supply your own examples - if you have any historical knowledge you will know I am right.

e.g. Allard tried the big V8 engine trick in a Brit chassis but Cobra scooped the market

The recent comments made by the tester of the Turner LMP is a case in question. The guy makes a similar remark about getting into the market late - totally ignoring the market realities of those who have succeeded because they took the time to research and develop and get it RIGHT!
