Auto box selector/indicator

Can anyone suggest why the indicator windows on my gear selector surround are out of sync with the gear that the car is in?...can be confusing, might get embarassing with the Reverse/Park proximity issue

Car is a '89 Rangie

I think if you take off the cover, you'll find the plastic strip with the marker has torn around the gear selector lever. Happened on mine too - fixed with tank tape.
