If it were mine I would be tempted to remove all the badges... to keep people guessing.....it is the ultimate Q car !
The only give away being the quad tail pipes !
I get that but as with the last one I did, I wanted them to look like something BMW would have sold so it has to correct in the details.

More on that later this week.......

An ever looming deadline to have the car ready of an event, a flurry of activity has happened this week.

A load of expensive plastic and a few metal bits in the form of new wiper arms, scuttle panel trims, side mouldings and some other bits and bobs.

The original load sill trim panel had seen better days a so a new one of those was fitted.

The original wiper arms and scuttle trims looking decidedly weathered and faded.

All parts removed and the area cleaned up and free of any corrosion.

New parts all fitted and everything dressed in aerospace 303.

Engine bay complete.

Royal steering wheels worked their magic on redoing the wheel in the correct printed leather and M tri colour stitch.

All fitted up with a new lower trim panel.

I wanted to ensure the engine was going to be running as well as it could so all four O2 sensors and both MAF sensors (a common issue on the S62) were ordered up.

I thought I was on a roll when the first three O2 sensors all came undone with ease so when I got to the fourth it turned into a complete battle which I ended up having to cut off, drill out the remains and repair the thread.

Despite wanting the leave the engine alone for now bar some sensors and what not, I put a new chain tensioner in it.

This little lot will be familiar to some of you who know E38/E39/E46 era sat nav and audio systems. I sent it all of to Barris at www.carphonics.co.uk for some upgrades.

The radio unit (bottom left) is know as the BM54 and is basically a radio with internal amp made by Becker. These are prone to the amps failing so Barris replaces and upgrades these. I also had some pre outs added incase I decide at a later date to replace the factory DSP audio system with an after maket amp.
The top right box is the original analogue TV tuner and this has now had its internals replaced with an Apple car play/Android auto system which works with the original 16:9 monitor and that was also upgraded to touch screen for the Apple car play.Android auto function rather than use the idrive controller type thing in the pic.

Spotify and Waze on the factory monitor. Winner!

A couple of weeks ago I dropped something off to https://www.b-trim.co.uk/ and Monday was collection day.

For those not au fait with all things E39 M5, the interior leather was offered in two types of finish, normal "Ostrich" leather often two tone in colour and Heritage leather with the vertical stitch which my donor M5 had. Now as BMW never made an M5 touring there are no heritage leather rear folding bench seats about so after dropping of the original saloon rear bench and my standard touring one, they made me a heritage napa leather touring rear bench.

They got it spot on in match in my eyes.

The rest of the interior all back together and finished off with a new set of genuine BMW mats.

Today saw a trip up to Gaydon as there was a BMW show on which was the deadline after being invited by the E39 M5 group organiser.

Where it was joined by the sister car!

Thank you everyone for the kind words!

I am very happy with how this one has turned out.

Last Sunday we sponsored an event for the BMW car club south east region at Denbies vineyyard in Dorking, "BMW's of the 20th century" and had a stand with a selection cars, the M5T taking centre stage. It drew a lot of people over and a lot of positive comments and interest which was nice to hear.

I’m looking and assuming the rear subframe is aluminium?

And the front is steel?

Funny as aren’t they usually the other way around on more modern BMWs?
Correct, V8 front subframes are steel, both are aluminium on six cylinder cars.

Hi Barry,

Did this get a full respray or just the bits around the corrosion repair? I'm looking for a bodyshop to complete similar work on my E39 and would be glad of the recommendation if you could please DM/EMail me.

Thanks

I said I was going to leave the engine alone and see how far we get with it as it had all the signs of being a strong lump. Good compression, good condition bores, strong but dyno performance and as had been proven, these magnificent S62's can do big mileage, like 300-400k without being opened up for major surgery so why the pic of the rod bearings above.....?

Yes I have sold it!

Part of the deal was for the new owners peace of mind that they were replaced and despite them not being too bad for 178k miles, they are done now so no need to worry about them.

Why have I sold it such a short time after completion? Well incase you haven't seen it, 003 came along and is going to need significant expenditure to bring it up to a standard it deserves.

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Chris aka CB 987 missed out on the first one I built so early on I promised him first dibs on this one so a deal was agreed and Chris collected this morning. A week ago I was driving down in the M5T to the bodyshop to strip a load of parts off 003 and I was thinking "what on earth am I doing" but I stick to my word and 003 needed to be saved.

I could always build another M5T...... but I doubt I will! I have wanted to build an S62 E46 for a long time so maybe that will happen at some point.

I think Chris will be continuing this thread with any updates and I did get invited to take it to the PH 25th Anniversary meet/show in August which Chris will now do. I'll be there and park 003 in the visitors car park if its ready!

It's been a fun and enjoyable build

Wish I could have made it today but after having 10 days off for a holiday in Germany, I had to work today!

Congrats on the trophy Chris and thanks for taking it to the event for others to see it in person.

I kind of wish I still had it to take to Germany with me instead of a normal E39 M5 saloon. (not the oxford green pre production car for anyone following the other thread!)

Would have got more beer in it!
