Was always a scooby fan back during the original era but now Evo's win it for me. Your's looks great!

Read this thread from the beginning following the front page article and was worried you'd binned it at Brands!

Great to see more of your car again, and the back story!

I’d like a grey 9MR to use daily (ish)

I think the 5RS was the best looking EVO

For me the best to drive is a 6 or 7 semi or full RS with some more power, brakes and suspension, including full polybushing!

Most of us are holding out for the 25 year magic 'R32 GTR' effect to do with legal importation to the States. You can pick one up for 5k or 50k, it all depends on condition. The biggest problem with them is corrosion, they're almost entirely water soluble. frown

Absolutely, once Mitsubishi changed to WRC spec and dumped Group A properly, the road cars went a bit soft.

Nice Evo, I have this Tommi in my garage. It's not been on track for five years due to getting a PE after a long flight to Vietnam and being on blood thinners for life. Seriously thinking about selling it and my 996 Turbo and getting a 430.

These look absolutely stunning and I've always wanted one, but never quite got around to buying one, so reading this hasn't helped!

I'm sure that an Evo of this era feels fast, but are they actually that fast compared to the plethora of 300+ HP hot hatches commonly available now?

No. well not really ( IMO)

I have a 2015 S3,
1999 Evo 6

The Lancer has considerably more power, but to me it's not about the power that makes them special, it's the handling. That Lancer feels like it wants to dive into corners. It;s ability to change direction is just witchcraft for an albeit small 4 door saloon. I know Audi have a bad rep in the fun dept these days and it is true to a certain degree.
Whilst it is extremely effective at dealing with B roads.......there's just a real lack of any engagement for me. The steering is numb, lifeless almost. It's slow to turn in ( comapred to the jap wagon) and just not a car i would class anywhere near a Lancer Evo.

Straight line performance? 400bhp Evo, manual box vs 300bhp DCT Audi with a decent launch control - not a lot in it.

( of course, I guess any forced induction car can be tuned, but for real speed that i've experienced, nothing beats a friends Evo 8 with all the mods, Ohlins, dyno'd at just under 700 bhp - fked me sideways, that car is fast laugh)

New cars bore me to tears, there's such a lack of driver engagement if you can't spend £100,000 plus.

Sure a 335D could probably walk away in a straight line, but.. sleep

I should update this for the tail-end of 2020 I suppose...

I got the car back in November after the turbo fiasco, and ended up having new front disks at the same time as I'd cracked the fronts at Brands. (I know, hero right?) It had a Evo 9 '80 series' installed, and a remap to suit (limited to 1.4 Bar). I managed to sneak it out of the garage for a quick drive a few weekends back, and it felt great. I don't seem to have lost anything by losing the 6 RS turbo.

The RS unit was most definitely failed though:



Somewhere on the run-up to Paddock is my turbine, if anyone finds it let me know! laugh





That's time at the bar this year though, as the gritters are now out and about in South Bucks.

Ceramic turbine? Same thing happened in my Gt-Four.

It was a TME RS unit, with Ti-Al turbine, nothing ceramic afaik.

Another near 12 months since the last update...

I managed Combe in August 2021, as was going well despite having not been there before:

It was a nice relaxed day, quiet, and I got plenty of clear track time. I also had another stab at Snetterton with 'race cars only' day in September and had a good time sharing space with GT3 (FIA) cars and such.







Then I made another trip up to C&M with a friend and his V RS.







The trackdays made me realise that compressor surge isn't all that pleasant, which I was suffering under partial throttle. So, just before winter 2021 I had a Link ECU, OEM 9 recirc valve, and associated gubbins/map installed at MAD. The difference is incredible, it's so much better at partial throttle than it's ever been. Now that the MAF is redundant, I plan on replacing the charge and intake piping for something less scabby.

The winter 2021 project was to pull the front bumper off, replace all the hardware behind, and repaint the bumper shell:





As I pulled it apart, it was apparent that all the screws and bolts needed replacing. I used Mitsubishi parts wherever possible, and stainless steel items where Mitsubishi parts were NLA. The intercooler was in ok shape, so I refurbished that and it came out quite well.

The bolts and framework were a bit of a mess..





The paint work is incredible, I'm very happy with the results.







I also had the bumper bar, supports, and mesh media blasted and powder coated. I had a result in finding an OEM oil cooler duct hidden in one of my parts boxes, which are long discontinued and I had forgotten I had it, so that's been installed in place of the fabric tow strap.











Whilst having the bumper painted, I had a spare pair of mirrors painted matt black, and fitted black door handles. Let's call it a TME RS homage...

Looks amazing.

I sold my 5 around 2016, looked at getting back into one recently and almost cried when I saw how much people are asking for now.

Are they genuinely selling for over £20k or is it ambitious asking prices? Seen loads of eBay auctions around the £15k mark but fail to make reserve.

There are no good cars for sale at the moment IMO, and there hasn't been for a while. Most good 5/6 sales are done privately, and without advertisement. Mileage is irrelevant at this point, if a car is rust free and relatively original it will sell for 20k+. I have mine insured for a lot more than 20k, for example.

I would assume most owners are sitting on the 5/6 until they're 25 years old. The early 5's will reach (or have reached, I'm not 100% sure) this age this year, and Americans are already buying both 5 and 6s and keeping them stored here and in Japan for future shipping. The 'red ones with stickers' are a law unto themselves, and I don't understand the pricing on them, at all.

That’s interesting, TMEs were a joke back when I had mine, especially with the revelation at the time they a load of the red ones were replicas built by Monster.

This is one I was looking at, if it’s as clean as it looks in the pics then it’s defo worth the money, but there’s other ‘fresh’ imports that are asking not too far off the same.

Yeah that one looks good, at least in photos. Even so, it's got a large gap 2012-2016 with no history on it.

I wouldn't worry about de-railing the thread, it's not been that popular in the last year or so! whistle

There's only a couple of things from Stuttgart that would make me sell, and I can't make that happen quite yet.
