Weight is approx 825kg according to the book so quite light. Might weigh it properly some time for my own interest.
It's a heavyweight compared with an AX... hehe

Done some MOT prep for the 104, but no point putting it for a test until winter passes. Jobs done: bonnet release cable is fixed and it's had a good clean. Unfortunately I got distracted by ebay and have acquired a French-German escort now too... more on that another time.

Long winter evenings means some more time pottering in the garage. I dropped the fuel tank out to investigate a leak when it is full. Easy job: 3 bolts and 2 screws is all that holds the tank up!! Small leak at the sender unit now sealed and a bit of hammerite to cover some light surface rust.

My very first car was a Peugeot 104Z! It used to be my great grand mother's!

I used to go practice handbrake turns on empty car parks (Sundays in France 20+ years back) and then smoke fags with my mates admiring how cool we were... until we noticed the seal around the fuel cap was so perished our feet were sloshing in petrol, ciggies in hands.

The fun we had.

The thread on the lovely Citroen LNA has spurred me on to give an update on the 104.

And the update is that it's still sitting inside and needing MOTd but there's little point doing that during covid19. I have however managed to acquire a personalised number for it that I would never have spotted had it not been for another 104 owner, ebay and most of a bottle of red. Pics when the plates arrive and are fitted.

There's a very characterful transmission whine as sort-of-like-a-mini the gearbox is the sump and oil is shared.
Yes!

Earlier, I posted in the LNA thread that I had an 1124cc Visa which I acquired when my Dad moved up to a BX with the 1360cc version of the same engine and it got to the point where we knew one was coming before we saw it, whether it was a Peugeot, Talbot, Citroen.

Or even, for reasons I could never quite fathom, a Renault 14.

I remember as a child also knowing what was coming from the sound of an engine, thinking "That's a Ford/Vauxhall/Rover/BMW" and being right almost every time. Not so much these days of course as cars are both quieter and more generic but it was a source of amusement and pleasure to the 1980s me.

The Renault 14 also used very similar ‘suitcase’ engines so that will account for the similar noises.

Not sure about "very similar". I think "the same" is closer to the mark. The bit I could never work out was why a Peugeot engine ended up in a Renault. A little research on Wiki reveals that the X-Type (or suitcase) engine was developed as a joint venture between Peugeot and Renault in 1969, so guess that explains it.

The bit I don't get now is why Renault only ever used it in the R14?

One "feature" of the Visa throughout our ownership was that the clutch was very heavy and went through quite a few cables. Towards the end of my ownership, I experienced the familiar inability to get gears and swapped cars with my Dad and left the problem with him. (He didn't mind, he was good like that!)

He and my BIL found that this time, it wasn't the cable but the bracket (looked like flimsy, pressed alloy) at the gearbox end had fatigued and split. They replaced it with a much sturdier cast steel one from a R14 and made a massive improvement to the clutch as a result.

Covid still curtailing activities but it's booked in for MOT at the end of this week. Might need a patch welded in front of NS front jacking point.
A little bit of tinkering and all the MOT necessary electrics are working as they should.

Shiny new plates attached...

Hi this is my Peugeot 104S.I have owned it since the early 90s..A good friend of mine had one same spec in red.And when i got the chance of buying one i did..It is the 1360cc twin choke and i am currently refurbishing it,,New driveshafts, all new suspension and anti roll bar bushes wheel bearings,discs,pads,steering..brake lines, rear pressure splitter and drum shoes and pistons..Hand brake cable..So the mechanical side is close to done..Then i got a lot of exterior interior work..I put new front wings on 15 years ago, that have only picked up some surface rust from all that time in a shed..If anyone can help me with links to parts like 4 speed gear knob,,new seat covers, and on alloy wheel center as one of mine is damaged i would be very grateful...Also any information on how many 104S right hand drives are left as there can only be 1 or 2, S models in the uk..And price due to rarity I've seen 3 doors for 40k pounds..Been told up to 60k but i will believe it when i see it..Again any help with this would be great..I have always loved my little Pug..I to have an original matching number...

Wow, a RHD survivor. Superb! Tiny numbers survive. Yours is the first pic of one I've seen. For parts:
- depending on the 4speed gearknob type you can get the square shaped ones as reproductions here: https://www.pieces-de-rechange-classic.com/15-l-av... If not then ebay france often has bits
- centre caps for the alloys: get yourself on to the facebook group (UK 104 Samba LNA Visa forum) if you're not already on there. There was a set on there a couple of weeks ago
- seat covers: no idea I'm afraid.

Prices of these despite rarity is low but climbing a bit. Good for buyers, bad for sellers! The only really valuable ones are the ZS2 coupes as only 1000 were made + motorsport pedigree. There are ZS coupes in good condition going for 6-8000euro abroad. 5dr cars much less.

You are missing something - we don't know the first 3 letters of the red car reg number wink

My first ever automotive diagnosis which adults listened to...

My parents neighbours had a dark blue 3 door 104 and one day when she tried to drive the wheels turned in opposite directions. My 10 year old experience with technic lego told me the diff was broken.

I said so.

Stunned adults turned to look at the child engineering prodigy in their midst...

Nope; "shush!"

I was vindicated later when said neighbour reported that I was correct and a new gearbox was being fitted.

I only acquired my 104X reg earlier this year, from a plate dealer down south so no idea what car it was on before. Should get yourself on to the facebook group as it's a great resource for parts/knowledge. Once it's back on the road need to go on a meet - if nothing else for a photo of the pair of them!
