BMW E39 M5 touring build #2

Cheers both, that’s a really useful recommendation, I did see Sreten’s post the other day too.
I have looked at similar aftermarket solutions before, but I’ve always questioned the quality and fit, but I think I’ll give one a go this time. It’s got to be better than what’s on there currently.
I’m normally a bit of a stickler when it comes to genuine parts, just for the fit and finish, but I think this time I’ll give them a shot.
They are rarely seen and there is always a good chance if I do go OEM, it will only take a low kerb to potentially destroy £300‘s worth of plastic….

You told me the story at PH25 but I didn’t realise quite what a close call it was!
Just FYI, Sreten from M359 restorations has just posted on Insta about reproduction ‘pork chops’ that fit better than the originals and are a lot cheaper.. might be worth investigating.![thumbup](/inc/images/thumbup.gif)

Absolutely agree...I have looked at similar aftermarket solutions before, but I’ve always questioned the quality and fit, but I think I’ll give one a go this time. It’s got to be better than what’s on there currently.

I stuck to as much OEM BMW as I could with my Japanese import E39s and my F31 now
But sometimes spending silly £££ on plastic parts, more so fragile ones from factory, makes little sense...
I fitted all OEM BMW undertrays and wheel arch liners, as they'd crumbled with age and heat jn Japan. But they were cheaper all in than one front corner undertray... Just silly prices
If I remember rightly, it's due to BMW only giving one company the permission to make those specific parts, so they charge you for it too... That was until someone finally managed to make a decent copy!
I'd spoke to Sreten a while back via his Patreon page re the E39 Touring undertrays and said he needed to stick with OEM BMW. Sent all the part numbers etc and he went with those as the copy ones are inferior materials...
As already said, even he went for the copy pork chops. That says a lot!

Another little job ticked off today, not long after picking the car up, I noticed that one of the threaded bushes was missing from the oil filter housing bracket. The remaining one was also looking a little tired, I am guessing it was probably missing when the conversion was completed.

So I popped to the dealer and asked for two new bushes and a nut, now I expected the bushes should probably be a few £ each, but knowing BMW they’ll probably be £10 each…. I was wrong….

Yep…. Nearly £60! To be fair the parts advisor did double check, as I was convinced we’d got the wrong bits.
All fitted and looking better.

Other than that the cars been great and I’ve been enjoying using it. It’ll be going into winter storage shortly, but I’m going to the October Sunday Scramble at Bicester, if anyone else is going, feel free to pop over and say hello.
Cheers

No big updates on this, the car has been in hibernation since late September, I am looking forward to getting it out and using it again.
The MOT expired in January, I collected it this morning for a fresh MOT, it passed with no advisories. The emissions were borderline, but the tester suspects this was due to the age of the fuel, so I stuck some fresh fuel in on the way back. The MOT tester recommended using a fuel stabiliser next autumn when it goes back into storage.
Cheers.

Just to keep this thread up to date, I’ve been managing to use the car quite a bit recently and I’m still very much enjoying it.
I’ve made it to a few events too, I was at the April Scramble at Bicester and the Collecting Cars Coffee run last month. I was quite lucky as they waved me into the main display area in front of the hangars. It was in good company as I also met with the owner of an E91 M3 conversion.
I was back at BMR for an oil service and to investigate the possible over fuelling and hunting idle. It failed a smoke test and was diagnosed with some perished vacuum hoses and in need of some new plenum gaskets. This seems to have solved the running issues and the MPG is now above 20 on a run which is a bonus!
I’ve also been trying to get a few other smaller bits done, I recently fitted new boot and tailgate struts. Despite the online guides saying it was fairly easy, I struggled with one side due to the restricted access with the power tailgate hardware, but got there in the end!
I’m planning a trip to Germany in August, which I’m very much looking forward to. I’m also looking at the possibility of re trimming the interior. I’ve taken some inspiration from the shadow chrome E39 M5 saloon which BMW have in Munich. I’d like to go cinnamon which I think will be a great contrast, I’m not a fan of black interiors. I’m just waiting on some initial quotes for this. I’ll potentially go for alcantara headlining at the same time and swap the current wood to birch anthracite too.
A few pics from the last few months and one of the interior inspiration.
Cheers

Still one of my favourite cars on here! Glad to hear you're still getting some miles in the car, great picture sitting next to the E91 M3 too I’ve made it to a few events too, I was at the April Scramble at Bicester and the Collecting Cars Coffee run last month.
