I seem to remember my mum having one in 1976-8 ish, we used to have a fruit machine company and I used to tour pubs in it emptying the machines, the memories of collecting beer mats and the stale smell of beer on a sticky floor at 10 in the morning are strong.

Love it, always fancied a Talbot Samba rallye. How does it feel to drive, like a fairly basic 106?
It's a while since I've driven a 106 so can't really compare. The 104 is quite soft - it does roll in the corners but it's much grippier than you'd expect. Lovely comfy seats, I wouldn't hesitate to do a long journey in it. There's a very characterful transmission whine as sort-of-like-a-mini the gearbox is the sump and oil is shared.

That will be sitting in the Commando Memorial car park then?
Yep, I live half an hour south of there.

An 1100 5 door in white was my first car.

A wheel bearing had gone, some bodger had mucked up the tappets and the steering column was potentially lethal (before it was fixed) but it got me and all my gear from Kent to Plymouth happily and could turn on a sixpence.

Good luck with the project.

Quick photo of the interior after cleaning the front seats. Peugeot had a knack for making comfortable but supportive seats. These are just lovely to sit in, even more comfy than the seats in the 205 (my office chair is an old 205 half-leather seat mounted to a swivel base).

Looks great - always liked these back in the day. To have had a car with a touch of French style, a decent small engine and 5 speed 'box, cool alloys, a rev counter, a sporty 3 spoke steering wheel back in the 80s would felt like winning the national lottery (which hadn't arrived yet!).

The interior, especially, looks very up to date as manufacturers go back to untrimmed door tops and stripy seats on many smaller cars today....

I saw a Lamborghini Aventador being ragged up and down a leafy London street with much noise to accompany it the other day - in a very similar colour to your Pug 104S with similar go-faster stripes too ! Assuming I couldn't sell it on afterwards ;-) I I would get much more pleasure from driving your car down the same street and the better class of onlookers would be more impressed! Nice one.

So rare - a real find.
My first car was a 1.1-litre 4-speed 104 ZS 3-door in yellow, followed by a black 1.4 5-speed which felt so much more modern (and had 72bhp instead of 60!). Then I had a Samba Rallye, 205 GTI 1.6...
Eventually moved on from what were then modern-ish Pugs after a couple of Mi16s.
All of them were great, none unreliable, but the black ZS is the one I'd love to have back.
In France they had a quicker, limited-run 3-door called the ZS2 and these are said to be worth £20-30k now. I'd still have one if my numbers came up.

...and in two years the 104 will be ULEZ exempt to boot!

A great car, absolutely top notch buy and I hope you can still get hold of all the required parts. It looks to be very sharp both outside and in - nicely done.

Brief update. I haven't done much to it in the past couple of weeks. Noticeably I've still to fix the front plate on properly! Might take it out for a run this weekend if there's not too much wet weather.

Headlamp bulb replaced as full beam had blown on one. Other than brittle plastic grille clips it was a straightforward swap. Lovely old fashioned R2 45/40W bulbs providing adequate light.

And I've started cleaning the interior. Carpets were a bit dusty... still dusty but slightly less so! Reassuringly rust free under the rear seats.

Given the car a clean and a small service ready for a trip to Wales this weekend. Not much rust to see under the bonnet... thankfully! But what a bas*ard of a location for an oil filter. Really easy to change if you don't mind oil dribbling everywhere. Sump plug picked up some filings. Spark plugs look healthy.

Wow, long time since I’ve seen a 5 door 104 even with trips to France most years - usually see a few 3 door versions.
My first car was EKF999Y 104 SR 1.2 in metallic blue. Looks like it ceased to be Feb 1996 and also seems to be the tipping point for a lot disappearing off the road according to how many left.
Quite a few fond memories of that car, it never did like damp starts though! laugh

Yours looks great and a much nicer interior than mine was. Will follow with interest and good luck with it smile

I’ve driven the car plenty this autumn but now that the roads have been salted it’s SORNed until springtime. Hopefully I’ll get a few wee jobs done over the winter to tidy it up some more. Meanwhile some random photos:
The car in its past life in France, and yes I still have the towbar (not fitted currently)

Blimey that takes me back!

My dad had a navy blue 104GL, we went all over the place in it. NVY246T. One year we took it all the way from Yorkshire to the south of France, including a visit to Mt Ventoux (which it struggled with 954cc). This was followed a little while later by a 104ZL for my mum (last seen being used as a chicken coop), a Samba LE (jack went through the floor when changing wheel) and then a 205 XE - must be something about that specific engine.

Not terribly much happening but I have sourced a proper gearknob for it to replace the horrible chrome job. Not easy finding a 5 speed knob as most were 4 speed.

Looks quality. What is the weight of it? Must be reasonably nippy with 80hp (quoted as new admittedly smile)

Weight is approx 825kg according to the book so quite light. Might weigh it properly some time for my own interest.
