Best driving route, Salzburg - Vienna?

Can anyone advise on the best driving route between Salzburg & Vienna? We'd be looking to stay somewhere nice (and picturesque?) somewhere roughly halfway.

Beetween Salzburg and Linz is not so much to see, so Autobahn seems a good choice, near Linz go off and visit St Florian if you are into Monasteries (if not visit the Salzburgring for a short blast), then leave the Autobahn in Melk (about 100 KM b4 Wien) another world culture heritage site and from here follow the Danube through the Wachau Valley an via Klosterneuburg and the Wienerwald reach Wien. Stay somewere in the VAlley (suggest a little wine town called Spitz) were there are nice hotels and taste the Heurigen (special wine)
