A question for all, quite simple
Why is it now required to close major routes for up to 10 hours whenever
there is an accident, the cost to industry must be incredible and the
disruption... Why not just get the road clear and open asap, Explain.

One reason is that in many police forces there is now a requirement to arrest drivers suspected of death by dangerous driving at the time of the incident. This brings all sorts of time limits into play and means that all of the possible evidence must be collected at the time rather than some investigations being done at a later date.
