Greetings all,

Looking for a little help, going from Ireland to Scotland soon and bringing the Elise and the....wife rolleyes who's not a fan of the lead foot approach. We'll be travelling from stranraer and need to end up in Edinburgh.

I'm looking for recommendations for roads where I can travel at around the speed limit and still enjoy myself without making myself single by journeys end.

Any thoughts looking forward to a few smart replies to this one laugh

There are some really good roads you can take, some that are really good at the speed limit, I used to drive between Edinburgh and Stranraer quite a lot. I'm away at the moment, so I don't have my maps with me, (can't remember all those B road numbers and many of the small villages, I'll hopefully post some routes up at the weekend for you.

Giles

PS. Do you live in the ROI or NI, hate to think what an Elise costs to insure in the ROI.

You could try the following route:

All of the B roads shown below will be fun at normal speeds.
A77 from Stranraer up to Girvan, not a great road, but there are not too many good ways out of Stranraer, and it is quite scenic.
B741 (just after Girvan) through Daily to Dalmellington, stay with the B741 to New Cumnock. A76 to Sanquhar, through Sanquhar to the village of Mennock, turn left onto B797 to Wanlockhead, at the village of Leadhills you can decide which way to go, if you are short for time stay with the B797 up to Abington, then take the A702 up to Edinburgh.
If when you get to Leadhills you have more time, take the B7040 to Elvanfoot, head south on the B7076, then left on the B719, this will join the A701 Edinburgh Moffat road, turn left to Edinburgh, this is a great road, but possibly not the best if you use the official interpretation of the national speed limit. If you have even more time you could try turning right, heading into Moffat, then taking the A708 towards Selkirk, (this is a fantastic road) after about 20 miles, just after St Mary’s Loch (big Loch on the right) turn left onto the B709 to Innerleithen (junction is by Gordon Arms Hotel) at Innerleithen turn right at the main road (A72) then at the end of the main high street, turn left back onto the B709 (easy to miss, and I don’t think it is signposted the B709, but turn left after the last of the shops towards a golf course), the B709 will take you nearly to Edinburgh, you’ll join the A7 about 10miles south of the city.

I hope this helps, Scotland really is the best place for an Elise.

Have Fun

Cheers for the advice Giles, I'm living in the ROI, and yes insurance is ridiculous on just about anything here. I opted for a high excess low premium policy as it was less than half what I was quoted elsewhere. Just as long as I dont crash it'll have been a good idea eh!!spin
